Grey Butcherbirds are found in a range of wooded habitats, including suburban areas. In inland areas, the birds tend to favour the denser forests.

Grey Butcherbirds are aggressive predators. They prey on small animals, including birds, lizards and insects, as well as some fruits and seeds. Uneaten food may be stored in the fork or a branch or impaled. Grey Butcherbirds sit on an open perch searching for prey which, once sighted, they pounce on. Most mobile prey is caught on the ground, though small birds and insects may be caught in flight. Feeding normally takes place alone, in pairs or in small family groups.

I like the composition and detail, and the contrast against the dark bg.

He doesn't look all that mean, but based on your description, he's a pretty fierce hunter! I like the isolation of this.

Nicely captured. I love the separation here but I guess you could also play around with the DOF to see what different kinds of bokeh you could acheive... well depending upon how long your model decideds to pose as well I guess :P

Ewwww. I just read your notes. Nasty little things, aren't they. I see how they got their name "Butcher Bird".

Great detail and bokeh.

great shot greg and very informative ..
i got a laugh when i got to the bit about the butcher birds preying on small animals, including birds, lizards and insects, as well as some fruits and seeds .. i feel sorry for the fruits and seeds now .. lol .. !!
sheeeeeeeesh .. amazing that they catch their prey in mid flight .. like robberflies .. :)
this one looks like a kookaburra or a kingfisher .. interesting .. and totally amazing that you got this shot from 45 metres away .. :)

This bird sounds like it's quite the hunter. Really doesn't have that menacing appearance that you associate with predators though. I like the crop and the bg suits the coloring of the foreground well. I wish I could see a closer view of the bird itself.
