So I go in to get hernia surgery on Tuesday, May 5th, no big deal, outpatient stuff. I'm a lifelong asthmatic, but all the appropriate precautions are being followed, no big deal, I've done this plenty of times before. They put in the anasthesia, out like a light... one day later I wake up restrained to that bed on life support (ventilator + a hodgepodge of other meds and machines keeping me going). Turns out I had massive respiratory failure during the prep for the operation, lucky to be alive today. And by the way, there's sarcasm in this, my surgeon was not lousy, he saved my life and I would not even consider getting an attorney.

Could this get DQ'd if challenged? The pic was taken by my girlfriend with her camera phone... however, while I was still on life support with my arms restrained, I scribbled out the word "picture" (barely legible, morphine does that to you) for her to take this. That has to count for something!

here's my scribblings from the hospital bed:

Post DQ:
So this got DQ'd based solely on the comments that I put in here, SC did not contact me for any additional questions. Here's the email I sent back to them:

5/22/09:
Hi,

I was notified that my shot:

"Just when you thought that hernia couldn\'t get any worse... (self portrait)"

was disqualified. Given that it was DQ'd for largely circumstantial reasons, I do wish you had contacted me with questions regarding it first. You DQ'd it for the following reason:

"Your submission must be taken and post-processed by you. Someone else may press the shutter button if you set up the shot and the camera settings"

I clearly setup the shot, I relayed through body language and finally scribbling on a note pad that I wanted the shot taken, I post processed the shot, I own the camera phone, and the camera has but one setting, full automatic, so there were no settings to set. So please let me know what the violation was and what I could have done to make this shot legal. Thanks.

John

I totally agree with you - the basis for the DQ was crap.

John, that sounds awful. I wish you a speedy recovery.

I really liked this entry, by the way. It never occurred to me this was a "self-portrait" (of sorts). Sorry about the DQ!

What a nightmare! And at the same time, how funny that your thought was to get a picture for the challenge. :-) Glad to see you're in good spirits and hope you're doing better now.

I'm glad you're alive. I'm disappointed to not see this on the front page. IMO it counts for something & I can't imagine this would be DQd. I'm highly amused that almost your first conscious thought was "picture" hehehe.

I am sharing the dream, I've got the first couple of things on the list,
Work hard '' all the time '', Get a Hernia '' Now I got a bulged disc ''.
I am on the way to achieve the drea.
I am sorry about your back, really am, feeling the pain you have to go through, I wish there is a way I can help.
Best of luck from someone who is sharing the same dream

Which one's the de-motivator? Nice poster layout and good effort with the photo.

This is something else, I really can't think of a better photo for the theme of the challenge. I feel for the guy, had some problems with a minor surgery once, Goodluck!
