I did not expect to take the blue, not even a ribbon, with such a tough competition. Thanks for your votes and kind comments.

The pg is my brother Andy ( senor_kasper). Actually he was also shooting. Thanks brother.

Shot in raw, slightly rotated and cropped, a little s&h on the camera to bring up some detail + usual stuff.

I really like your brother in the picture, looking at a scene through his camera. It makes me wonder what he was focusing on across the lake. :o)

This is so beautiful. I wish I could capture skies like this. I remember having to do a gradeschool report on Orion so it is one of the first things I recognize in the sky. Congrats on the blue!

The markings are correct enough for us here at DPC ! The three stars in the bottom polygon (not the ones that form the belt) make up his sword. These are the stars that are going from upper right to lower left in the middle of the bottom polygon. The top right star is very dim. If I recall...it is not a star at all but the Orion Nebula...which IMO you can just about make out the "purplish" tint in your photo.

I can see Orion the Hunter from here !

How did you get so little of a star streaking effect with a 61 second exposure? Does it have something to do with the 16mm lens?

Nice use of light and dark areas to compose a very relaxed looking scene. Congrats on the fine image, and that it was recognized as being exceptional. You were fortunate to be where you could have that clear blue sky to the west of your position.

Highlights right on the edge, prefectly back lit, crisp and sharp and very, very well controlled color and light. While not terribly interesting from an artistic sense, it still is an excellant image close to perfect as possible.

if there was an award for best lighting on a challenge about darkness, youd win it :) the stars really bring a new dimension to the picture :)

I think the photographer ruins the mood. Feels like an intruder in a very serence scene. The night sky is fabulous.
