poor lighting/flash. try forcing the flash not to be used and instead use a tripod and take a long exposure on a moonlit night to fill in the rest

Okay, you have multiple sources here. The problem comes from how far back you are when the flash goes off. Most camera flashes will only go about 10 feet with 5 really being the optimal range. The biggest thing you can do to improve the shot is move forward. That gets the flash into a range it can actually work.

The darkness in the middle of the building really hurts this. Without bringing huge lights, the only thing I could think of was to lengthen the exposure (which might also make the fountain more interesting) and trade off the center for the sides being a little over exposed.

This looks like a nice old house; and choosing the location for your submission is a good idea... the light in the foreground is somehow looking not right. did you use a flash, or was it some other source? if it was the result of a flash - might i suggest you rest your camera on a solid surface and use a long exposure and the timer? also post editting it could do with a drop in brightness or an increase in contrast for the dark areas aren't really dark or bold enough - a bit to greyey if you will. it's a good idea for the shot that does meet the challenge.

Too dark and muddy. It's best to aim for a true black somewhere in a pic like this.

Looks a little like the mansion and the fountain in Omega Man

should have held up a yellow or orange filter over the flash to even the color temp from the multiple light sources (or not used a flash at all).

It is a little underexposed

Nice subject but the lighting is not right. Too bad the fountain is not lit up.

This photo seems to have a lot of potential, but needs a lot more contrast. It's hard to tell since it's only 35k and is suffering terribly from jpeg compression.

Underexposed on the center makes this difficult to enjoy. A longer shutter would have created a nice effect on the fountain andbrightened the rest of the image.

Unfortunately the lights have let you down here. You might want to investigate changing the levels in photoshop to reduce the flatness of the image and bring out the black. I'd also crop the front a little to remove some of the grass. The blance between the lghts and the fountain is nice.
