woo-hoo! posthumous ribbon!

I want to confess. When I entered it I knew perfectly well that this photo stood no chance in the general ribbon race, but I was secretly hoping that its darkness and austere minimalism might catch Don's attention - and voila! I was right on both accounts :). Thank you Don, and thank you all for great comments! My favorite is "Interesting concept but it's a little dark". Only a little?! :).

Speaking of the composition, contrary to one of the comments I like the vast blackness surrounding the lights, cropping that out would do no good IMO. If anything I'd make the black field even bigger, but in this small 640px format it probably would not look good. Also, I'd prefer the middle light a bit higher, but that was the train I got, and I didn't want to wait for another one. Overall I am quite happy with this shot.

Brilliant. You command my admiration for your ability to create stunning visuals with the least amount of light and shade and forms and shapes. As a railway man's son I always had a fascination for trains and engines and this really is a staggering short that kindles nostalgia all the way back some 50 years! :)

tome directed me to your 'Japanese Train' image and by chance I stumbled in this.
So glad I did.
Wonderful.

I like it, and I'll bet it looks pretty cool in negative too. Thanks for the comment. This too was a worthy PH Red!

I'm honored to be this photograph's first fave. Amazing, isn't it, how we only require the slightest, most basic clues to imagine the entire scene beyond.

This was my choice for "best in show", so I'm really puzzled by the low placement. Great shot, very creative.

A complete technical success with the highlights being right on the edge of overdone. The lens flare effect is also a plus with the light reflecting off the tracks. A little more effective crop concentrating on the image and lessening of the blank space would have positively affected the image from an artistic sense. A very unique and clever look at the challenge subject. Well one - could be a top ten if the image was a little more concentrated on the lights and their effects.

I like the idea, but it somehow got lost in translation......

Already voted, back to comment. This is probably not doing so well in the voting, but I love it!!! The simplicity of it speaks volumes. The lights are great with their flares and enough of the track is lit up to make it stand out. The composition is good and I like the low key feel. I love the artistic quality of this set up. 10
