Nick, if I'd gotten a comment as rude as the first one you received on this image, I'd probably sell my camera. *smile* But, let me encourage you to stick with it. Ignore people who are just being rude, and listen to the contructive criticism in comments. We ALL start off where you are. I try to use DPC like the game of golf. Get your average and then compete with yourself at your own 'handicap' score. Just look at each image you submit's score and compare that to your current average. Is it even just a little bit better? Or somewhere in the same range? As long as you're generally raising your average... then it's all good.
I can't wait to see your next entry! |

Nice title... yet still... this is a photograph of a fire hydrant. And it's not in great focus. *sorry*
Not voting. |

Interesting shot, good details in the grass. |

Interesting shot, and cute title. The shot could use more contrast. |

I don't think the black and white enhances anything here... I also think a different POV would have made this more interesting. |

In B&W too - since a dog supposedly can't see color... |

Good use of humor. a bit more contrast and sharper focus would have made it a more compelling photograph, I think. |

cute...just a little to "centered" for me... |

a dog's post office..... got to check the mail... |

I'm affraid this is not very appealing to me... maybe a different b&w conversion? Or better lighting? |

Yes it is, but otherwise not an especially interesting shot. I think it would have more interest in color, especially if it was a nice red or yellow hydrant. Also it's not as sharp as I'd like to see it. |

sorry , the image does not really appeal to me. |
03/15/2009 09:19:21 PM |
imo the focus should be on the word open |
03/15/2009 03:52:21 PM |
The b&W treatment is okay, the subject is a bit cramped in the frame. |
03/15/2009 02:39:41 PM |
ok, how do you comment on this? dang, 16 photos left and this pops up. I think this would have become something else using a "hard light/ other" layer. create some serious contrast, if you know what I mean |

Too OOF, a little more contrast may have helped or even color. |

Little bit uninspiring. I don't really understand how this can be your best photo ever taken and hidden gem. |

Don't take this the wrong way but as I see DPC as a learning experience here is my frank critique:
This comes across as a snapshot. By that I mean that I feel that anybody standing where you were with a camera could have gone click and got this result. I think a photographer should aim to do more than that. I may be wrong and perhaps you do have more of a story to your shot but the fact is that it doesn't come across to the viewer.
As an example, if you were in Paris and saw the Eiffel Tower you could hold the camera and go click. You'd have a shot that millions of other tourists have and would be good as a record of your holiday. I think at DPC you need more than that. You need to consider the POV - make it something that enhances the tower (include a flowerbed or kissing couple in the foreground), make use of lighting (dusk for shadows), composition (maybe include the buildings beside it to get a sense of scale).
I hope this helps and please don't be offended, I'm only offering an opinion. |

good conversion to black and white |
03/14/2009 10:58:38 PM |
Yes it is. Maybe it would be more interesting if it weren't so centered, and maybe if you shot it from a different angle. |
03/14/2009 09:44:20 PM |
Maybe a dogs cliche, but we don't see nearly enough of them on DPC for it to be a cliche here. |
03/14/2009 03:36:47 PM |
The b/w makes this a more interesting shot. |
03/14/2009 09:35:52 AM |
And it looks doggy sized too |
03/14/2009 08:40:57 AM |
I like the textures in this image. |

They say, "On the Internet, they can't tell if you're a dog." Not that that's helpful, you understand, but I can't think of anything else to say. |
03/13/2009 04:43:07 PM |
I think the centered composition is not the best choice for this shot, I like your choice of B&W. |
03/13/2009 01:43:12 PM |
i like the contrast and technically everything seems very good, but in my opinion it might have helped a bit to shoot it from a different angle, maybe from closer to the ground. That's just my personal preference though, nice work |

All you need is a dog! ;-) Interesting concept! |

03/13/2009 08:21:12 AM |
Oooo kkkk. hahah. Good on you for seeing some art in this. I do like the black and white. Needs a little more focus tho. |

Good concept. OOF hurts the score. |
03/12/2009 09:25:02 AM |
with a lower POV (dog's eye level) this would make sense |
03/12/2009 08:58:09 AM |
03/11/2009 08:37:45 PM |
Needs to be sharper to have effect. |
03/11/2009 06:38:15 PM |
Is that a hydrant. Looks like a very tiny one. |
03/11/2009 04:25:10 PM |
Selectively saturating the fire hydrant would make this a little more interesting. |
03/11/2009 09:56:16 AM |
a little too central in my opinion |
