Wind withered tree in limestone fields on Twistleton Scar End, Yorkshire Dales, England.

Inspired by Falc's 'Clints and Grykes' entry in the first challenge

The title Weathering Heights is a play on words from the famous book 'Wuthering Heights' by Emily Brontė. The novel is named after the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story centres (wuthering is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather).

The windswept tree is a common site around these parts due to their unsheltered location and exposure to the often harsh environment so common on these moors, particularly in winter! The limestone rock doesn't escape either, as you can clearly see the effects of the chemical process known as carbonation, resulting in the distinctive appearence of limestone known as clints and grykes. These are formed when rainwater flowing over an impermeable surface on reaching (permeable) limestone, dissolves the joints into grooves called grykes, leaving blocks or clumps of limestone in between called clints!

I'm sure there are experts out there that may dissagree with me on that, but that's about as much as I know on the subject anyway!!! :-)

Post-challenge:
Thank you to everyone who voted and left comments. I'm really pleased this did so well...and a blue to boot! Prior to voting I had been hoping for a top 5 (well...a ribbon of some sort if I'm brutally honest! :-), so this is a wonderful suprise!

p.s. A print of this is going to have pride of place over my bed as we're just about to have the bedroom re-decorated and have new furniture installed, and the colours will match it to a tee!

I pretty much friggin hate you, in the total cool sense, of course. This is a very nice photo. I like the tree. um, yeah. But basically, it is such a nicely composed shot. I am truly happy for you that you were able to take this photo. I hope you enjoy it and continue to share it with the world!

Somehow i really feel that a 1:2 crop will give the tree more prominence. Nevertheless, what a great shot! the colours and contrast bring out the dramatic clouds and textured rocks so much more. EXCELLENT!

It's such an interesting shot that I will forgive you the groan-inducing pun of a title. The juxtaposition of the deeply fissured rocks with the softer bucolic mid-ground is very good, and of course the tree is reduced to an uncertain limpet here. 7.

Love this! Great perspective, dramatic lighting, and interesting juxtaposition of the desolation of rock and barren tree with the green rolling hills in the background. Very cool.

Excellent use of foreground, and very well balanced in light/shado/composition. What I like best, though, is the angle of the poor tree - what a harsh environment, yet it's there. Great location - 'grats on making great use of it, too.

Wonderful find. Well composed, and despite the deep DOF, nothing is flattened, the landscape speaks for itself.

I knew this one would have to be in there somewhere. (Could this be the most photographed tree in Britain?)I thought I'd seen it from just about every angle but you've produced yet another and IMO a really stunning image. I don't need to wish you luck - this has got front page stamped all over it.

wow. this is so far my favorite image in the challenge. those rocks are just beatuiful, the landscape is so beautiful. the windswept appearence of the tree adds a desolate look to the photo. looks like scotland to me, of course i've never been there(sob) so what do i know?-9
