Challenge: Opposites (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Lens: Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM
Location: Sandy Point Beach, Hudson, Qc
Date: May 9, 2004
Aperture: F 9.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/200 s
Galleries: Emotive, Black and White
Date Uploaded: May 11, 2004

Taken while on a walk with my favorite model, my daughter.

The tree really impressed me, as it towered over my daughter. I immediately thought of this challenge.

Lens: Canon 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 @ 28mm.

In PS, having a hard time keeping my edits to the rules, but here goes:
-rotate, saturation, channel mixer to convert to bw, levels to get a more high key feel, crop, resize, USM, border with a inner glow to give a soft feel to the outer edges.

I REALLY like this shot. It will most likely make it onto a wall in my house.

Mario, I think it's a fantastic shot. I really like the title and understood your meaning. Well done!

Very nice. Wish I could see more detail in the person, but it is a nice shot. I don't quite see an "opposite" in it, as a person is not the opposite of the tree, but I can see if you were going with the tall/short opposition.

Good choice of black & white. I would have cropped it a little lower to avoid the other tree which is intruding on the frame. It's very still a very nice shot.

At first I didn't think this fit the opposites challenge, but I kept it up on my screen for a while and now I appreciate it much more. The lines of the figure's body, the position of the arms and contrasted with the boughs of the tree and the framing with the background of the water is very nice. The horizon looks just slightly off a little rotation would fix that.

What a beautiful photo, really show the enormity of the tree. Very cool.

This is one of my favorites of the week! Good job!

Love the textures... the tree, the water, the ground in front. Then the enormity of it all compared to the child. Great picture!

There's just something about this image - this is about the 4th time I have come back to make comments. It's captivating and very well done. The pose of the model is precious. It shows "big" and "small" very well. You have reduced the effect of the terrible sky by placing the trees in optimum positions. I'm not fond of the border, but try not to let that influence my voting.

I guess my only reason for not giving it a 10 is very subjective - and something I can't explain. It doesn't really have a "wow" impact on me - but it's darn close.

Good take on the challenge; nice shot too. Perhaps a notch bright, but perhaps you were going for a bit of a high key effect.

border too wide, gives it a snapsot feel.

best picture this week

Short vs. tall - that's an opposite. Still growing? I'm not sure how that's fits the challenge. Otherwise, a very nice greyscale.

Absolutly beautiful!

I like much: simplicity and effectiveness - B&W
I like less:
Score: 9

I think this is more of a perspective picture, but I still like it a lot. Excellent contrast. 8.

They're both growing I think you stretched it a bit. BTW so did I.

how does this meet the challenge?

black and white goes well here... but the exposure is a little bright

Great picture, but where are the opposites if they are both still growing?

I like the white border, I like the choice of B&W, and I like the shot itself. Nice job.

The tilt of the girls head makes this shot IMO. I like the way this shot is pushed, it feels big and empty with this little person, rightfully placed in a much bigger world than she. Well done.

This is a nice photo and it should do well. Personally I give it a 7
05/12/2004 10:36:25 AM
Very nice, but it seems a tad overexposed. The foliage on the tree in the upper left seems to be an unnaturally bright relative to the foliage on the right.
