A woman making banana pancakes in Malawi. Incidentally, the best damn pancakes I've ever had.. and they took over an hour to make.

I have a feeling this image could do very, very badly and my emotional tie to the memory is what is making me enter it. It's my favorite of 08... the image quality is not great (low light, high iso and some movement) and there is a lot of clutter and shadows. All which **I** love. This breakfast started me on a journey by car through Tanzania (after finally getting my cast off) and it was one of the best few days of travelling of 08.. it makes me smile.

I wouldn't change a thing and thanks for all the lovely comments. I figured I'd up around here but what I didn't count on was some kick ass comments. Those are better than scores I think :)

This is an intensely compelling image. The lighting is out of this world. I was one of your 10's. What I like is the combination of complete reality with photographic excellence, which for me turns this into art.

It's a very Magnum kind of photograph; just enough art to be aesthetically pleasing, and just enough fact to have documentary substance. The scene is at least largely offhand, but the lighting and composition are seriously considered and professional. And I'm especially impressed that you bothered to know exactly what she's cooking. So the picture is all about the subject, and not about what a hot photographer you are. Even though you actually are. Very fine work.

Good use of available light. It really makes this photo stand out.

Lighting contrast is strong (maybe it adds)! Otherwise, a very fine shot!

Does draw me in and make me want to learn more. The size of the bright area on the back wall takes me away from this interesting subject. Mabye consider a crop that eliminates the back pan close to the wall while retaining a bit of that orange container in front.

I was tempted to say that this should be in black and white, but I actually like the muted colors here. Gives it another dimension, but still preserves the contrast and textures that the black and white would show off.

I like the moodiness of this shot, the lights are almost blown out but they create a mood which suits this shot to the ground. Very nice you shoudl be proud of this shot

I love Africa and have been there many times...many of the women are stunning and your have one right here...my only criticism is the exposure seems to be a bit contrasty, but other than that, great shot

outstanding capture of rural African life - the light on her face is insane - what quiet dignity she has
