This was taken the day after a big (for Leeds) snowfall. It has been really tough choosing a picture for this challenge, I have another shot that has a slightly more DPC friendly composition, but I decided to go with my personal fave here. Whether or not it turns out to be too subtle is something only voting can tell. I don't know who this man is but he was very elderly and the path was quite treacherous so whoever you are - hope you got round ok! I got several other cool shots from this day which i'll be posting up as out takes. J

Greetings from the Critique Club

I rather liked this during voting (gave it a 6) and was surprised it didn't score a little higher.

I think the commenters have pretty much nailed most of the reasons why it didn't score higher. There is possibly too much reliance on the title, as the elderly man is really rather lost in this. The composition is good the way it is, but in order to emphasise the subject (as your title has made the man the subject), it would probably have been better to crop a little tighter. The tracks on the ice are great, but I am inclined to agree with tnun about cropping out the stones.

I think I would also probably suggest a slight levels adjustment to lighten the midtones. You could get a bit more detail out of the trees which I think would have helped. Also, as this was a sunset/sunrise challenge, I wonder if a slight boost to the red/yellow saturation would have helped your score. It's such a lovely wintery scene, I just don't think it has reached it's potential. It may be a tad too sharp as well.

Hope this was helfpul. Give it a go with a slight crop and levels adjustment. I'd be interested to see how it came out.

my vote 8 - I think a marvelous location, a favorite in this challenge, possibly a touch sharp.

Like the colours and the wintry feel. I think you could have made more out of the composition with a slightly tighter crop - mainly the 4 biggest stones are a distraction from the wonderful tracks on the ice and the slight detail and colour nuances in the trees.

It's kinda like a 'Where's Waldo' huh!?!?!?!?! Not much sunset/rise going on really.

Very wintery hues, I like the guy walking along the path. I only think I'd like ti better if the trees had a bit more depth to them, that is if the ones in front were a bit brighter/seperate from the taller ones in back.

The patterns across the frosty ice surface have just the color to convey a sense of cold. Subdued non-saturated sky a nice break from the more saturated competition. If that person is walking toward the camera, another capture a few seconds later might have allowed better separation from the dark background elements.

the figure is lost in the background it's hard to understand the picture without the title - without the title it is just a picture of a frozen lake with the out line of the trees
