Wow - didn't expect to ribbon with the score this was getting - thanks!

This is a piece of lichen that I picked up while doing a photo shoot out in Lake Tahoe earlier this year. I actually brought home quite a bit of it & have it growing with different plants around the house. I was intrigued by how absolutely neon green it is as well as its texture. Lighting was a single Pentax AF540FGZ with a Gary Fong 'Whale Tail' with a blue insert.

Didn't think it would ever bring me a ribbon, I was just hoping for 6+... :) I had a lot of alternative entries for this challenge that I personally liked better and almost didn't go with this one. I only went with it because I thought it had the best combo of color, texture & puzzling-ness and I didn't have a lot of time left to edit before the challenge deadline. Generally speaking, what I think is spectacular here at DPC doesn't do nearly as well as I expected in the end.

Anyway, this one was taken with my 100mm Macro by itself, but I tried something new while creating images for this challenge: using my Vivitar macro focusing 2x converter combined with the FA100mm ƒ/2.8 - really produced some spectacular results (see below) - can't wait to use that combo (double macro!) on some bugs...

Here is one alternate I had seriously considered using that combo:

...and another:

You really didn't expect a ribbon? I really liked the green and the blue background!
The focus on the lower part distracts me a little bit, but it's a great shot! Gave you a 10 on this one!

A stumper, so meets the challenge. I love the depth of this image ... very very well done! Colors enhance it. DOF enhances it. Practically perfect and among best of show.

Oooooooh, cool. Some sort of sponge? Maybe a pot scrubber. Maybe even moss that grows on trees. Whatever it is it looks great.

Great use of a "sponge?" But I always thought of my synapses as more of a pinky color, but anyway, great sharpness, detail, and DOF. 8
