Challenge: Where You Live (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Location: Montreal, Qc
Date: Apr 20, 2004
Aperture: F 8.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/250 s
Galleries: Cityscape, Sky
Date Uploaded: Apr 25, 2004

This shot was taken using my kit lens @ 18mm, which I almost never use anymore, except I really wanted to get a wide angle effect on this shot. I also used my polarizing filter to enhance the contrast in the sky. I took many shots but chose this one because of the surreal look of the big sky and little city down below. It was shot in RAW, and converted using Canon's FVU.

In PS: Used the 10D Finisher action (which mainly applies sharpness in a very elaborate manner, using layers and different blending modes, etc), some level adjustments, and applied a Velvia action (@ 30%) which augments the intensity of the colours to simulate velvia film.

I also ran it throught neatImage, to clean up the sky a little.

Finally, I burned the bottom part of the water a little, dodged the buildings a tad, cropped, resized and saved for web.

I really like this photo, because it ended up looking exactly how I envisioned it. Only think I would have wanted different is more of the wide angle effect, but this is all my 18mm could generate.

The colors are very sharp and clear. I don't know what your editing capabilities are but I would have attempted to correct the tilt and perspective issues.

I adore the color and composition, but the horizon kind of bothers me. Is it tilted up on the right, or is this one of those fish-eye lenses, or is it just me? Still a stunning photo.

Nice sky, but it looks like you have a bit of tilt on the horizon.

Nice subject and colors. Beautiful sky. Sharpness is ok. Maybe you could zoom in a bit or crop out the buildings or stuff on the far right, they don't add to the photo. I find it strange that the landscape on the right tilts upward.

Big sky ... nice blue ... nice worm's eye view. Some might want you to straighten the buildings especially the ones on the right (use the skew or perspective tool) but I like it the way it is.

its a good shot, but montreal can look much better than this. 6

From (painfull) experience, it appears that photos with a large percentage of sky for some reason often doesn't do well. Well, those voters are wrong darn it to heck - a good dramatic sky always works for me, and this is a case in point. The sky here is gorgeous. Unfortunately, it appears that something has gone a bit awry with some of the buildings away from the centre, which in turn gives the impression of a wonky shot. In certain post processing software this effect could be minimised a little by distorting the image (using free transform in PS). Still, it's certainly an attractive skyline.

Nice colours and well-composed. I like the use of reflections. A few things that can be improved: 1. Perspective correction to straighten the buildings. 2. Rotate your image CW to level the horizon. 3. Seems a little over-sharpened... there are halos around the buildings.

Very nice composition and use of the image space. Colors very pleasing and saturated. Looks like there is a small keystoning effect which is unfortunate.

Nice but seems distorted--the right side is tilted relative to the left!

I would have vertically straightened this shot - but it's good nonetheless

Lovely photograph and good use of the wide-angle lens to bring out that sky and add depth. I find it disturbing to my eyes that the "vertical center" seems to not be in the actual center of the photograph, but in line with the taller middle building, making the right side of the image "lean in" more than the left.

Looks a bit barrel shaped to me..the horizon is bowed? Stunning shot and I like it. Great colors.

Great shot. I plan to do almost the same shot someday from somewhere on the side of the 132. Some few comment: Your photo seem to have been shot at wide angle because there is an obvious distortion in your shot. you can see the river rolling up in the right of your photo. The image seem tilted too like the camera was inclined on the left side. Your sky is beautiful, you had a good light but it seem your camera was pointed slightly to the sky because it gives the impression that the building are bent over their backside. if you ever do that photo again, my advice is don't zoom out all the way to the wide angle side, point the camera at level and be carefull no to be tilted.

Great picture..Personally, I would have preferred if you had gone for the water rather than the sky for the bulk of your picture..but good work nonetheless

SWEET! which city is this ?
The composition is very good, though the colors are a little off and you could've cropped more of the skies so we'll see more of the city. but still very good photo!
