You mean like this? instead of ?
This is a fantastic shot, but when you do an extreme crop from a larger shot, the noise will eat you alive. There is no way the more distant shot does this justice.
Allow me to pass along a tip from a fellow dpc-er - check out either Neat Image or Noise Ninja. The above was done with the free version of Neat Image using Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 (and I don't know how to use anything but the most basic functionality - I did a sharpen slightly OOF and reduce noise). You might even be able to get it better than I did.
Other than the noise, this is a great shot and great capture - worthy of publication.

Yeeps! that car's in fire!!!
So, it's blurry, so? (Blame it on the speed of the car - or maybe the heat waves)
:-))

If I were to guess I'd say this were a crop from a much larger image. What I'm seeing is loss of detail in addition to the grain. If I'm correct on the crop the larger pulled out image is probably fairly sharp.

I can't say I blame you for not wanting to be physically closer to a car speeding around a corner while on fire! Not to mention the driver on the wrong side of the car. He's a mad man!

Grainy, gritty V8 Supercar, looks like a Mark Skaife No 1? I like it as it is, captures the whole essence of Aussie Motorsport. What you see is what you get!!

I think it's ever so slightly out of focus. Perhaps some aggressive sharpening and contrast would give this an even edgier look. Can you crop it larger to give it more perspective to its position? It looks like it might be going sideways.....that's VERY cool if you can convey that with background. Nice image, nonetheless, and a great capture of the fuel-laden backfire!

It looks more grainy than out of focus to me. Great shot and would have been awesome if it were crisp.
