I'm not to good at recording steps or saving unflattened files, but I'll try to give you the steps beyond the basic adjustments as best I can remember.

On a new layer I painted white where I wanted to lighten the deer up. Then added some gaussian blur to soften the edges and changed the blending mode to soft light. Finally I adjusted the opacity until the lightening had a natural appearance.

For the background I used a radial black gradient(reversed so that the deer was in the hole and the darkening was over the grassy areas. I switched to soft light again and adjusted opacity.

I also painted the edges black, but the rest of the processing comes from an overlay(minus border) borrowed from a link on Roz's tutorial. I used two layers of it...one set to soft light and the other was erased over the deer, but I can't remember which blending mode was used(probably soft light). I adjusted the opacity on both considerably.

Hope that helps.

...and here is the original so you can see where I started...

Special thanks to Andrea Rusky for sharing his overlay...

Nice on all levels. I like the slight tilt, which adds motion and the colors are very deer-like.

I like the warm colors and how the image is angled on the diagonal. The slant energizes the shot.

HAHA - are you competing with me? Seems deer is the subject du jour. I like that yours is so close. We are getting right up next to this lovely creature. The vignette makes us just zoom right into him naturally, even though we'd want to study him more any way. Love the light.

The first thing I thought was, 'Hey, you lookin' at me?'. Sorry. The diagonals and head position are intriguing and the simple colors serene. The processing is somehow causing me to think I am looking through an old window pane from a cabin in the woods. Nice!
