Challenge: Night Sky (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Nikon D300
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II
Location: Greeley, CO
Date: Jun 2, 2008
Aperture: 3.5
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1.6 sec
Galleries: Sky, Nature
Date Uploaded: Jun 3, 2008

Severe Thunderstorm edging just east of my house in Colorado. WB to give cooler appearance. Slight dodging and burning (very slight). Slight Noise Ninja and 3-4 lights removed.
First entry with the D300. Amazing how little amount of Noise Ninja on this and no in camera NR.

As for the color saturation, only WB was adjusted to 4050 and Tint to 60 from -16. And the no "stars, planets, etc." there were stars, but at this size they did not show up. Besides there is a planet. PLANET EARTH! :)

Thanks for ALL the comments and the great scores!

June 16, 2008: When my score has hedging over 8 I decided to send in for qualification on my own. I sent in my DNG file, which is the workflow that I have been using over a year in speeding up my processing. Unbeknownst (sp?) to me it has not been embedding the original NEF file into the DNG. Apparently that is a MANUAL setting (as far as I can figure) each time the Adobe Downloader starts its auto processing when the CF card is sensed. Also I had been shooting pictures on that same card afterwards and was only able to get a RAW NEF file recovered that was about a minute and 30 seconds after this one was taken. So a few NEW processes to go into effect for my shooting.
And by the way...from the "specific" details of the challenge..." The visual impact of your image should be heavily dependent on YOUR depiction of the night sky."
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/5000-9999/6771/120/708251.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/5000-9999/6771/120/708251.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I find it funny that no one said anything about DNMC until after it was DQ'd. Talk about kicking a guy when he's down...

I'm still undecided if it is DNMC or not, but that's just my observation.

So, what happened to your original image file? I gave this a "5", because it's very good, but it totally ignored the challenge description requirements. No, the Earth is the Earth... not a part of the sky. And, I see no stars or moon. The challenge was supposed to be about showing the night sky... with stars, planets or moon. It's a mystery to me as to why you gathered in so many "10" votes without meeting the requirements of the challenge. A mystery indeed! If I had done this, I would have received 93 "1" votes!!!! LOL!!! I live in Colorado. I am sure there were big T-storms somewhere in Colorado on June 2, 2008. It's a mystery as to why you were not be able to supply an original image file. Care to help us understand and be sympathetic?
06/13/2008 04:00:20 PM
sorry this was dq'd. its one of my all time favorite shots. I do not think this was DNMC... its the night sky, on planet Earth.. you are right.

Nope, I thought the same thing and I know one other who agrees. I gave it a 5... had the challenge description not been so specific I might have given it a 7 or 8.
06/13/2008 02:09:27 PM
I can't believe you were dqfd!!
What happened with your originals?
This might be a once in a lifetime subject, but the talent should always be there. Keep up the good work!!.
06/13/2008 12:52:55 PM
wow, very dramatic and well-captured.
06/13/2008 12:34:09 PM
Totally sucks about the DQ. I don't think it's fair, but...

No stars, planets or moon. To me this was DNMC but I think I was the only one who thought so (apart from the three 1 votes). It's a beautiful image of a lightening strike but not a night sky capture as was expected and described.
06/13/2008 12:18:13 PM
Dude, what happened!!
06/12/2008 08:17:33 PM

Dazzling sky! I guess three voters needed to see little white spots in the sky to say it met challenge. Well, the rest of us love it!

Congrats with an phenomenal image and score as well. Well deserved winner.
06/11/2008 03:37:55 AM
Beautiful shot, makes me want to go buy a Nikon 300 - I don't think my Canon 400D would touch this. Beautifully saturated colour.

Congratulations

WOW! Look at that... score! :) Awesome job. Congratulations!
06/11/2008 02:30:21 AM
Geez. You got about 40 more 9s and 10s than I had total votes in my FS entry. I bet your average shot through the roof and into space after this one. Congrats!
06/11/2008 02:28:00 AM

06/11/2008 12:50:29 AM
I was one of your 10's, on a totally selfish note, I'm impressed I finally picked a winner. Praise through appreciation. Your score is incredible, it restores my faith in Colorado :}

Good balance of earth and sky, following the rule of thirds. Nothing distracts from the lightning, and the color is eye-catching. Well done!!!

06/04/2008 01:12:18 PM
You know, I absolutely love this shot! I am adding to my favorites.

But here is the heartbreak, I generally don't DNMC folks because I can usually find some way to fit every shot into a challenge. But this one was very specific about what was required...stars, moon & planets.

This is a wonderful shot, but I'm going to have to dock a point or two.

Awesome, a classic lightning shot. You don't often get to take a picture like this so it's a mix of luck and skill. keeping the shutter open for less time and taking more shots may reduce what I suspect is some motion blur on the cloud, but it's a minor point.

excellent lightning, but "Use the moon, stars or planets" DNMC
