I absolutely LOVED shooting this. This is my Father-in-Law, Derek. Completely out of character. He is normally over-dressed (the Queen could drop in unannounced, and he'd be dressed for the occasion), and a total English Gentleman.

Surprisingly, it only took a small bit of coaxing... and he donned the dog-collar. It was actually his idea for the love/hate on the knuckles AND he came up with the title.

Set up in the studio, and it only took about 10 shots to get it right :O)

Thanks Dad!

Wow! Thanks for the votes & comments everyone :O) Glad this did well.... thanks for putting up with the dog collar, Mr. C !!!

Wow! What a great shot!
The personification of an old school British Bulldog indeed: proud, defensive, defiant, pugnacious; wry, ironic and playful. You nailed it and he personifies it. Way to go!!

This is positively delightful! Please thank your father-in-law for playing along - he's a fine looking man, and looks to have a wonderful sense of humor, which most English Gentlemen have if you just look for it. Congrats on the ribbon!

Shame on me too, I didn't notice the dog collar either. I didn't even notice the love/hate. His eyes are so compelling, I didn't see anything else (well, I did see the vest ;-) Congrats on your ribbon with a great image.

Shame on me, I didn't even notice the dog collar! My eye kept going back and forth between the "HATE" and the expressive eyes. Congrats on a well-deserved ribbon (and on marrying into a cool family).

:O Scary but cool!

Could have done with being a tiny bit sharper around the top of the head/hair, apart from that, I like it.

Great portrait, but I don't like the border. I find it too intrusive and it distracts from your subject.

An exciting image there. Sort of a combination of Johnny Rotten and Reggie Kray. Who is this person. Your photos captures a nation, in a way. 9

If this doen't get a blue you've been robbed. the pose looks a little 'staged' but otherwise a great shot. You can take the Dog out of the fight, not the fight out of the Dog. 10

Love the subject and the grainy, high-contrast treatment. Hate the black bars. Would love to see a tiny bit looser crop over his head, but that may be constrained by the original capture.
