Savannah was born four short weeks ago. Her mother and father, seen here together in their first family portrait, are both students in my program. Mom is a sophomore in high school, and dad is a junior (that's 10th and 11th grades). They live together with dad's family, and mom's family is also very involved. Dad works at a local pizzaria and goes to school, and mom was working at the same restaurant until she was well into her third trimester of pregnancy. She plans to return to work as soon as she can and has secured evening child care.

Mom and Dad both have been enrolled in our Parenting Skills course this year. They are both bright and level-headed kids (for the most part) and seem to be working hard to make a go of it. They don't plan on marrying until they graduate, or at least that's what has been said so far. Dad is very active in his parenting role.

One neat story about Dad...the assistant principal was not going to let him leave when he got the call that his girlfriend was in labor. The AP said he had to have proof. The young man came out to my building and I called the hospital, got confirmation, and then called the AP myself so he would let him sign out and leave campus. He could have easily just left without permission, but he wanted to do the right thing. I was very proud.

Both kids are polite, respectful, and share responsibility for their circumstances. I am so hopeful for their future together.

P.S. I took this with a crappy little HP Photosmart 320 we have here at work, so the quality is crapola...but the story to me is more important than the technicals, I think. ;)

Laurie! What a touching story. They look so happy -- and so YOUNG! I'm so proud of them too, and am going to pray for God to give them all the love, wisdom, determination, stick-to-it-'ve-ness, and hopefully faith in God that they will need to make it work.

I'm happy they have someone like you in their life too!

I agree. So let me critique the story: I think it lacks the typical stereotyping we have come to expect. It could also use a tad more drama. How about this - the boy is an inner city gang member and after becoming a father, he tries to get out but they won't let him. He just has to pull off one last "job" to secure the money for him and Rosita to run away together. :P

Seriously - I am loving your project - the photos and the stories.

Wow - the kids sure have their work cut out for them early on. Kudos to them for staying in it together. I wish them well.
