well, i finally did it...i bought the Canon 5D and it is amazing. I'm hoping this , my first entry with it, will go over well, but i'm not holding my breath hah

this is caylyn, a recent client of mine that came needing a headshot for a pageant she will be competing in very soon.

post processing includes raw conversion in lightroom, with white balance and exposure corrected only. then i converted it to b&w using channel mixer, and that's that. resized, added a border, smart sharpen, and here we are. i hope you enjoy!

i would also like to say that this is somewhat a tribute to Larus. he's always been one that would help me out here and there w/ different things, and his work has always been an inspiration to me. his "walking" shots have always stuck out to me. this shot was not taken thinking of this challenge. she was walking towards me to start shooting at a location behind me and i loved the repeating lines of the power poles above her, so i snapped away. i hope it does not get voted down b/c of the blown highlights, for i could have corrected them w/ highlight recovery but i liked the way it looked just like this. we'll see

i just hope to have a 6.5+ image again :D

but my guess for this is a 5.7

==================

Thank you everyone for all the great comments. I can see how everyone that commented about it not be environmental could have taken it that way, thanks for taking the time to comment! I thought it showed her independence in a not-so-beautiful world, but she was able to strive and be confident above all. Again thanks so much for the comments!

This is really pretty, I really like it

I'm surprised this didn't do better, but I suspect part of the reason may be some didn't connect with it for the challenge. I really like the angle, the blown highlights (I like blown highlights), the contrasts. It does remind me of something Larus would shoot!

Lovely Black and White. Love the full length shot.

nice photo, I especially like thta fact that the BG frames the subject very well. I think though that the contrast was a bit overdone as there are many areas that have no detail left at all.

It almost looks like a fashion shot rather than someone in their element

i love the black and white choice for this. I know a lot of people probably wont like the harsh lighting in the back, but it helps the viewer keep their eye on the subject, and then the environment just fades in. Awesome shot

OK portrait, but is this really her environment? Not convincing. Looks more out of place.

I see is a pretty girl in cool clothing out in the street. But I don't get a sense of who she is, feels a little lost here.

This doesn't really grab me, no real reason why not. Art speaks differently to different people.

good focus and DOF, good POV. like the b/W conversion, although the contrast is a bit high. The environment doesn't tell us much about her, though

well done the B&W makes this

Great portrait. Love the tones. Interesting background. I'm not sure that it tells anything about her, which takes away as an "environmental" portrait, but still a wonderful shot.

Nice image, b&w works well for it. I particularly love the contrast of her shoes against the asphalt. I think I'd like this better if you were a little closer to the subject.

lovely portrait. Don't know that it tells me much about her in these present surroundings though. (10)

I actually really enjoy this picture. The black and white conversion is well done and I like how the background gets blown out in the middle, I think it makes for a more dramatic shot. The horizon is tilted, however, which seems odd since she appears to be standing straight up. I fail to see how this really fits the title and the challenge as a whole. She is alone, but I don't see how her environment says anything about her. Challenge aside, this should put in a nice frame and on your wall. In a free study I probably would have given this a 7, for the challenge I give it a 5 though...5

Good composition, B&W really works here,

beautiful shot, love the B/W work here, but i'm afraid you might take some hits for this being more of a traditional portrait shot, rather than a environmental shot of a person in their surroundings. Unless she is a street urchin. doesn't look like one tho :P
