Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Blurry Mess (Basic Editing)
Collection: Successful Challenge Entries
Camera: Nikon D300
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon
Date: Mar 11, 2008
Aperture: F32
Shutter: 1/5 sec
Date Uploaded: Mar 11, 2008

I submitted this on the final day of the challenge -also my Birthday! Woohoo! Anyway, I didn't have time to put comments originally because i was submitting late as usual (my final JPG was saved at 11:56 PM).

I knew what I wanted here - I thought a "Spiraling-Spin-Zoom BLUR!" would appeal to the critical eyes of DPCrs. I finally needed to us my 8x ND filter in a challenge. Since I recently lost equipment to the river, my choices for lenses was slimmed down but maybe it worked to my benefit.

I zoomed lens to 20mm (for smallest aperture of f32 to allow longer exposure in daylight). 1/5sec worked after looking at a few tests. I zoomed out to 10mm and rotated simultaneously while dragging to the side a bit with the camera pointing up into the branches of a tree with the grey sky as a background ...
The problem remained that the image was a very good fit for a greyscale challenge (colorless) and also needed more contrast. So, in LEVELS in photoshop, I grabbed both ends and exagerated the lights and darks. Used a hue/sat layer to add the blue tint, crop/rotate 180,noise ninja, save for web.
NOTE: I realize the title is a misspelling, but I didn't have time to double-check ;)

Now THIS is the kind of unique photography I'd love to be doing. Anyone can take a picture of a tree, but you've added a gorgeous twist to the everyday and I really appreciate your work. Thanks so much for telling us how you did it. I'm using a digital without interchangeable lenses or the ability to add filters, but your photo makes me want to go out and buy a better camera. Thank you!

Nice going - great texture and comp - and blue was a good choice to offset the blur (dpc loves blue!). Was an 8 from me during voting - I particularly liked the spookiness. Congrats on the ribbon!

By far my favorite of the challenge. The texture of the tree really helps the flow of the motion blur. The tone, while somewhat unnatural for the subject, fits right into this composition. Great job! 10

This is almost like a tunnel, beaconing and frightening at the same time. The hard decision is whether to actually GO down the tunnel.

I like that your spin blur has a whirlwind feel to it... makes the picture spooky and has that "Sleepy hollow" feel to it....

blurry, chaotic, engaging. I give a 9. Upon further review I am bumping this to 10.

Ok, the tree with the spinning of the camera... dead on! First round I marked this an 8, but I am bumping it up. I also love the blue toning in it.

There's a few of these on the challenge, and I think this is the best of the "camera spin" effect. Very engaging for me, and fits the criteria, albeit in a simplistic fashion. Some won't see mess, but what do they want, some garbage (literal) floating around? I'd rather look at this.

My exploration of this image says to me that this is a tree, and the simple chaos in the natural subject is applicable to the wording of this challenge - if not it's implied idea.

I'm not awarding any points for being overtly creative, but I'm not scoring this as a simple abstract either. The subject was key for me here.
