Challenge: March Free Study (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Location: Henty Dunes (West coast of Tasmania)
Date: Mar 11, 2004
Aperture: f/13
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/400
Galleries: Landscape
Date Uploaded: Mar 19, 2004

One of the many 30m (100ft) high Eucalypts or gum trees that is being swallowed up by the Henty Dunes on the west coast of Tasmania. These magnificent dunes, move slowly inland and gradually swallow up the vast eucalypt forests along the coast.
This was taken with the kit lens on the 300D and apart from cropping, sharpening and auto contrast, only 3 small black spots from dead leaf litter on the sand were cloned out. Probably could have made the sand a bit whiter, but this is accurate to the actual colour of the sand on the dunes

Thanks for the comments and for those who thought this was a desert shot - well it's actually only a 100 metres or so from the ocean :)
Here's a better shot of the area by another photographer, which shows this

If you poked your head over the top of the sand dune in my pic, you would see the beach :)

Love it, I would have bumped up the saturation, that's about the only thing it needs..... in my opinion. Good Luck, Todd. 9.

clever how the shape of the log and it's shadow are so different. I think the sand pattern in front is of equal interest, can you increase the contrast in the sand so I can see it better - it looks all washed out n my monitor.

I love it. Aptly named. Great use of shadow, and good detail.

Love the sand sky shadow texture with the texture of the wood giving it all depth. I think this will do well. About the only thing I could wish for is the POV to be slighy farther left or right (probably right) so you can see the branch coming out better. Though that would have messed up the shadow angle.

This is very bleak and sunbleached. So different from where I am at the moment,
rainy and rather cold. I like the way that the stump and its shadow, occupy the middle third of the picture, and conform to 'the rules'
