There are two ideas that I was working toward in this photo.
1 - let shadows expose the half hidden subject. I think this is an "old standard" technique but a good one. I'd like to work on using this idea effectively.
2 - a sense of 3-D in a B&W photo. I think this has a 3-D quality but could be improved.

Taken with a point and shoot. Small point and shoots make photography possible on work days.

nice sparkle in the snow and it's exposed well but I gotta say, I really hate that grey border, it takes away from an otherwise interesting image.

Very simple and pleasingly effective. The composition with its contrasting angles works well. I think you are close to getting there with the 3d aim, but I can't offer you any advice here! A photo that I do like.

LG, I like the idea of this a lot. (I think it suffers a little from the small size and your grey frame). Snow and light on reeds make this.

Like the combination of strong vertical lines with the somewhat softer diagonals. (Not sure grey border is the best for this, perhaps just go with the white.)

I like the abtract feel and the conposition here. I would have likes to see a bit more contrast. The grey border does not work for me -- maybe a very thin black instead?

Cool shot, I really like the compositon you used. I think that boosting the contrast a bit would help you achieve the 3-d goal a bit more. I also feel the border is a bit distracting from the image.

The texture of the snow make this photo for me. I'm not a fan of the grey thing border, but that is just personal taste. I would think a darker thin border would keep your eyes in the composition more. I do like the shadow and it gives balance to what would have been an unbalanced composition.

This has a calming feel to it. I am not sure I like the boarder but I do like how the shadows lead us out of the picture.

I like the lines within the image. Personally, I would boost the contrast just a tad. Interesting image - thanks for sharing!

this is great I love how there are two stories, vertical and diagonal. I may tried to add a little contrast with an S curve adjustment, but maybe not. With the light breaking from the side like that it really gives everything a nice texture.

Wonderful. Such detail and texture. I wonder as did others about a bump in contrast, but I too like high contrast. In this case, though, I wonder if some burning and dodging might be better than a straight contrast boost. That's because I love the reeds the way they are, and if you bump the contrast, they'll change, too. So, maybe some dodging on the snow to make it brighter and more white (while controlling it so as to not blow it out, something you've avoided well in the initial shot)? I do like it as is, though . . .

Your description reminded me to write something about what I try to do in my photos. Your photo reminds me of colour, how natural colour is, what a useful tool it is. Absence is a tool too. Causation, the sun, the reeds, therefore the angled shadows, and the necessity of each is what I learn from your photo.

I think you achieved what you were after. I really like the composition play here. very well put together and thought over.

The shadows add visual interest. Tones on the conversion are good.

Impressive control over the exposure, we don't get much snow here which is just as well cos I struggle with it. Good job on making a 'boring' subject gain interest and thanks for the story behind the shot - helps the viewer a lot.

I like the lines here, and that's what makes the picture. I think lightening up the snow would add a bit of contrast.

excellent control of exposure on the snow/ ice - i can almost count the individual crystals... the shadows really provide a great break to the snow

The detail in ths snow is awesome and I love how you used lines and diagonals to fill in the picture. You will see from my photos tho that I like heavier contrasts and I wonder how it would look with a little more contrast? For a photo, my preference is to see the shadows stand out from the background a little more.

I like the suggestion of the additional reeds, and I think your exposure was great - I usually blow out snow terribly!

Hi LG! I think you did a great job. I have lately really come to appreciate the abstract beauty that lines and shadows give to a photo. The black and white processing gives it just the perfect drama and contrast. Great job!! I look forward to seeing more of your stuff :)

Great to look at. Soft shadows on the beautiful snow (or ice) and the strong lines and dark tones in the foreground. Would do very good in a "Zen" challenge, I think. Not sure about the border, perhaps less gray (or none).

What is the point & shoot? I like this, the snow is excellent for providing contrast.

I do like the idea you're going for here and I think this works pretty well. To bring out more of the "hidden subject" idea, leave out even more of the objects casting the shadows. Your exposure is very good to get the detail on the reeds and not blow out the snow.

I do think this worked well. I like the "clash/contrast" of the vertical and diagonal lines in the image.
