Handheld situation in low light.

As usual for me I made the most of a 1 minute shoot when I asked Nina (the day bartender at Amarone) to pose right in the middle of her shift. We went up near the front of the restaurant where a little daylight was creeping into a tight area. By the window in between a few tall bar tables, I asked her to sit in a turned around chair, face the light and I managed to get off about 8 rounds. I'm kinda happy with it but she was ecstatic, which is good enough for me.

Shooting like this seems to be my norm. If I ever have time, space, good light and a pretty model, I may have no idea what to do...

Good job on the lighting and exposure. Love the catch lights in the eyes. I wonder how it would look with the eyes on the upper right thirds?

Wonderfully posed and composed, eyes are fantastic.

Love the eyes. I second the suggestion of cropping some of the forehead to bring more emphasis to these mesmerizing eyes.

Good lighting and I think the eyes make this pop. They look good and sharp w/o out appearing overdone, nicely done!

I really was not going to upload it, and wanted to keep it upto myself. But I really liked it and I wanted your permission so uploaded. About pp, if I keep on doing it, it is not good.

I absolutely love this photo of yours. And I have been playing with it, just for experimenting and learning sake.
Here is my modification:

Anyway I need your permission to use this photo in a small tutorial I am planning to write about this technique about blurring. (for DPC folks)

You have captured her eyes incredibly well. There are no other whites in the photo that match her eyes which makes them pop (not literally!). Also, her eyes are in sharp focus, and the rest of the face is in softer focus. The tonal range is also very good. I really like this portrait!

The composition and the crop work great. Focus on the eyes is spot-on. Awesome photo for handheld, low-light and quick.

This one is my favorite of the two...actually by a long shot as I don't like the tone so much in the other one. Both are fantastic compositions and Nina is so natural and relaxed. Wonderful portrait.

I really like the soft and dreamy quality of this picture. Her eyes add just the right amount of brightness to the picture.

A beautiful model, well photographed and very sympathetically processed. The eyes are out-standing, but I also like the way the light has caught the girl's lips. A very pleasingly natural photo.

Edit: just read the other comments I have to agree who;e-heartedly with jdannels - it is 'an honest photograph'.

What a classic! Excellent focus and DoF IMO. Natural, soft light is incredible when captured but it also doesn't hurt that you have a beautiful subject. Recommend you sit her next to a window some day and take more like this. Then share! LOL!

Personally, I'd strive to get the white's of her eyes a tad brighter/whiter in post production but that's just my personal preference - this is an awesome image as is. Great job!

The eye is like an oasis in some faces. The contradictions a photographer faces when depicting truth and beauty are what I learned here.

Nicely composed and a great capture for a minute, if only I could do portraits that well in an hours(or days) worth of time.

Bery pleasing image... the lighting is perfect.. I would agree with a tighter crop for more emphasis to the eyes.

Must say I do prefer the tighter crop below however love the image and as has been said its all so natural looking. Gr8 work on the eyes and lips and wish I had the guts to walk up to a pretty model and ask to take her pic.

This is simply fantastic; I think you really nailed here, especially with the eyes. I thought it could use a bit of crop before I read Brad's comment. Either way it's well done.

In my humble opinion there's nothing wrong with this light. Yes its subtle but you used it masterfully! I wouldn't have know you had less than the conditions you hoped for if you hadn't told us. There's just light enough to highlight her eyes and lips beautifully. You had the pretty model and it looks like you made the most of the space, time and light you had.

Very nice DOF and B&W conversion. Great shot overall!

The light you needed, you captured; the time you had, you used; without space, you went to your subject. And in so doing, you brought us the light, the shadows, and your subject. Wonderful shot.

This is beautiful. I love that in the conversion you kept the highlights from the lipgloss - that still looks so natural. And what did you do to her eyes in the post processing? They just pop out of the picture and look so real.

Sharp in all the right places, with a nice softness to match the subject.

Wow Steve - forget time, space, good light - this is fabulous.
Has a candid look & feel to it, so natural!

Only suggestion I have to make this fantastic shot even better would be an alternate crop
to place a bit more emphasis on her eyes and a little less of her forehead in the shot:

Stunning image of a stunning model. The lighting is really lovely; it's hard to believe it was fairly spur of the moment! You did a great job.

It's the first day -- you are JUST in time :) I'm so happy you are here. I'm looking forward to seeing your weekly work for a whole year! WELCOME !

This is beautiful! BEAUTIFUL! I adore how it is dark and sultry, yet the eyes: Wow! They are sparkly and pure.

I don't think I'd change what you are doing if you can turn out photos like this with such little effort - Sometimes -- trying too hard with the technicals and fancy equipment (and rules) might turn out a technically good photo -- with no soul. This: has soul!! FABULOUS!

It feels very natural to me and I love the catchlight in the darker eye - really adds a nice spark. I like the low light aspect - there seems to be just enough light to me. And here's hoping you get to shoot her more often - she's a very striking young woman!

I like it. I like the expression on her face and b/w does a good job here. I would think about cropping just a bit off on the right so she is not dead center in the image. You can't do much there - would be even better if you could get a bit more space in the left - in the direction she is looking. At the same time I don't want you to lose the close up nature of the image.

I like the detail in the face. I don't shoot portraits so not much else to say.
