Challenge: Free Study 2008-01 (Advanced Editing VI ("Time Lapse"))
Camera: Sony DSC-R1
Date: Jan 4, 2008
Galleries: Emotive
Date Uploaded: Jan 20, 2008

Trying something different. This is what free studies are all about.
The color it seems was already present in the original but i bumped into it accidentally.
I did make another version of it first:
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/45000-49999/47483/120/638516.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/45000-49999/47483/120/638516.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Nobody seems to be interested in this version but I love the dark version.

Anyway I love this version too and this is why it is in free study.

The post processing roughly is this:
1. used neat image to do noise removal on original jpg.
2. opened it with lightroom
3. auto tone present
4. increased the exposure to bring out the whites.
5. split toning- increased the saturation and adjusted the tone a bit.
6. exported to CS2
7. cropping etc. resizing
8. play with saturation and level etc.
9. apply unsharp mask, with high radius values more than 0.75
10 with little bit of adjustments and border, saved to web.

I have no idea how it would score, this is type of shot we do not see much on DPC so could not guess.
If you liked it you are welcome.

we go to cricket forum and there its pretty much aussies vs indians all day pulling each others leg.

but i must say there is one thing scotts are not used to losing, and that one thing is snooker. I am waiting for higgins to add another trophy come april.

This is just stunning, it's one of those shots that I see and fail to understand how it scored below 6 never mind below 5!

Glancing through the other comments I agree that it's almost in the style of an impressionist painting, but still retaining all its photographic detail. I like the pinks and orange that you have here, if you hadn't told me otherwise I would have believed the scene was actually those colours originally!

It certainly is one of those that belongs on a wall, if it was mine that's exactly what I would do with it!

I remember seeing this during the challenge and thinking to myself "wow.. that's not going to do well." I almost instantly appreciated the beauty of the photo though. It is very Impressionistic.

You're photo quite clearly belongs on a wall. It is very much a painting. Unfortunately, the voters on DPC don't usually appreciate photos that aren't perfectly crisp with a clear subject and colors they expect to see.

In your own words you were "trying something different." In looking at other photos in your profile, I can tell you that you don't need my advice on how to take a photo. I think this photo was just an experiment that isn't appreciated by the masses in this venue. If it were a painting on a wall in a museum the opinions would be vastly different. Keep experimenting. You're a great photographer!

Wow, that is beautiful! An intense burst of colour that hits you and makes you jump as soon as you look at it... The title is most appropriate, to me this is like visual poetry. And who cares about the score, I'd be happy to see this on my wall any day.

The dark version was my original vision about this photo. This is what I saw one I shot it.
I asked my brother to stop car and jumped out of it and took three pics. It was so surreal, these white birds flocking this tree while the day was dying, right there in front of me.

For the pastles version, I guess time to time painter in me comes out and I try to have party with colors. This is one good thing about being hobby photographer.

I love the composition, not so much the color/tone processing. I'd love to see this in a low or no-sat version. It should have done better IMO. It is a lovely, peaceful setting.

I do value your comment a lot.

I like your dark version better, to be honest. This one has it's charms - the nice pastel colors for one - but I find myself wishing there were more contrast and detail to be seen in the very center of the shot, all the crowded together branches and shrub.

I do prefer the dark version for a print, though the pastels would be great for a painting. I tend to also make my pictures into a "painting", I think because I wish I could paint. Nice work and hooray for those of us who love our pictures no matter what the score.

Brave, fascinating, different, but in my opinion ultimately unsuccessful. The 'pastels' are fine but too pink for my liking. But with an image like this we're into properly subjective territory. Kudos for putting this shot in.

Exactly my thinking about that version and this is why I loved that one. White birds in dark.
This one is because of colors. As posthumous said 'pastels', he was correct this was the exact approach to this one.

you said correctly, this is type of thing only few can like or appreciate. I personally would paint it one day and hang it in drawing room. I love colors.

I'm not sure if this was an application of an artistic effect, or just an overexposed shot. Either way, it does not come off well to me, I'm afraid. I think improvement of this one needed to start in the camera.

While there is a lot in this image, it doesnt have a clealy defined subject that grabs my attention.

Too much red tones. Very distracting.

this could be a nice pic; good composition and nice scenery. But what have you done with the colors? Sorry, but don't like these tones
