I saved this view of the lake for my Free Study simply because it's the only image I have NOT splashed around.

Minimal doinking, really.

I had to look around the results of this photo to try and understand why it placed where it did. It really didn't deserve a 5.3, but there's some great photos that placed above it. There's some not-so-great ones up there too, but they're the typical DPC crowd pleasers to which I say "eh..."

This is an absolutely beautiful scene. If the foreground tree wasn't where it is, I'd have no qualms with the composition, but as it is, I want to push it out of the way.

Your processing does seem a bit rough. You say there was "minimal doinking," but it looks over sharpened. I love the colors though. One thing I noticed was a pale pink in the background along the water line. If you could bring that out a touch, I think it would add greatly to the whole image.

Overall this is a great winter image that is very telling of the area you live. There is a lot of great elements. If I had voted I would have given it no less than a 7. Knock out the tree and give me some pink and it would have been a 9.

Doinking?! That's some unique PP program you've got there, mister.

The scene is lovely, no question. I would like to see more of the detail on the house, just 'cuz I LOVE stone houses. Lots of character. I wonder, too, if the sidewalk was also stone, and should show more of the brown color of the house? The driveway is not as good a leading line with snow all over it. Also might see what I could get if I stepped up a few feet so that little tree on the left wasn't in the shot. But then you might lose the cannon, and living in VA I appreciate seeing the occasional cannon in someone's front yard :-)

I scored this a 6. I definitely saw (and appreciated) the quiet beauty. OTOH, there was something about the processing (in the building and the tree in front of it) that seems harsh/over processed. Maybe too much contrast? I'm not good enough myself to pin it down, but it conflicted w/ the mood and pulled the score down for me.

A great landscape shot with great lighting - all good. To make it stand out from the pack though, that's another thing entirely, especially in one of these huge free studies. From my perspective, the composition here is good, but it is also, to be fair, predictable. I like another commenter's suggestion you get down lower, try a different perspective. This really is a good location - maybe also try a similar shot with a wider angle, so you can get closer and not lose the breadth of view as you have here?

Jeb, I think this is a beautiful shot and gave it an 8 in voting. Peaceful and serene is what immediately came to my mind when i first saw this. I could imagine being in the cabin, in front of a fireplace looking out over the calm water.

I'm scratching my head trying to think of how you could have improved this one. The subject is lovely and the composition completely appropriate. Perhaps a wider view taking in more of the river? I'm not sure the lighting is perfect - the house doesn't attract much interest as it's shrouded largely in darkness - if it were lit up a little more I think the effect would be better. But a great winter shot - I'm quite jealous as it hasn't settled at all over here!

I know that there's a better picture here if you get down lower so that there is more of interest in the foreground.
