I was just getting ready to go to bed on New Year's Eve when I looked out my upstairs window and saw what we assumed was a small fire accidentally started by firecrackers on a little farm near our neighborhood. As the fire grew, I hopped in my car at 1:00 in the morning to go get some photos. It was so windy that this little fire ended up raging over acres and acres of this man's ranch! I sure hope the cows and horses were all able to get out of the way! It looked like there was nowhere to go. The entire land was up in flames for over a mile of land. Huge trees that were hundreds of years old were burned to the ground :(

I can't imagine being that guy, watching my world burn. Very emotive.

I loved the intesity of this photograph. Its impact was such that I could almost smell the smoke and feel my skin tighten from the heat

I thought the silhouette worked brilliantly for a number of reasons

1. It allowed the viewer to see the size of the blaze
2. Compositionally given that it is at a rule of thirds point in helped provide a great structure to the shot
3. The pose, without being overstated seemed to really convey the sense of resigned helpness of the person against the fire

Beautiful range of oranges and a great job getting the actual licks of flame so sharp in the image

What I love about your work Sandy, is that not only do you take spectacular photos, but you also have amazing stories to go with them. First, what a nut you are to have gone out to a FIRE at 1AM. But what a sad story that goes with it too. Did you ever find out what happened to his livestock?

Sandy, this must have really been something to see! Great photojournalism here. It is really too bad about that rancher's land, though. I also hope his livestock was not hurt!

Great shot. Plus, I think you've demonstrated one big aspect of being a successful photographer: being willing to hop in the car at 1:00 a.m. to chase an opportunity!

Great one Sandy, a lot of emotion seen here by the isolation of the person.

This is AWESOME Sandy, and felt it deserved a higher score..... The story behind the image makes it a "10" in my eyes.....

Very emotive and quite sad..... I do hope the animals were saved.....

Excellent photojournalism! Not sure if the fire was intentional but I feel for the poor farmer whose hard work is burning away! I really love the emotion in the image!

I think the image has good impact and the composition is pleasing. The only fault is the slight motion blur negatively affecting the crispness of the photo. 6

Well composed and strong shot, that bit of halo at the left of the man is not that distracting.

The silhouette is not sharp enough. The flames are good.

Nice shot, I do wish it were a bit more clear though.

That must have been a serious fire. I like that you were able to include the man as an observer.
