I've only just joined the DPChallenge community and this photograph is my first submission. I am a passionate photographer of landscapes and had planned on submitting an image depicting a passenger plane confronting massive storm clouds before I realised I had to create a new photograph within the competition time frame. So thankyou for compelling me to create my own instance for capture.

---

Thinking more literally I decided to focus on immediate events taking place in the Middle East - the conflict in Palestine, the US led invasion of Iraq & Afghanistan. I drew from lessons of Robert Macnamara, as presented in the recently released documentary "Fog of War", reflecting on the folly of war and the terminal threat presented by Nuclear weapons.

~

I used a US penny, dropped into a foiled plate of watered-down tomato sauce. The point of impact was layered with non-diluted sauce.

I shot in sunlight with my Canon G5 set accordingly -

Zoom 3x, MF 20cm, A 1/500, F 5.0, ISO 200

I shot 10 images (because my sister, assigned to coin dropping duty, was very quick to complain about the intense heat of the summer sun and retreated indoors)

I would have continued to shoot with a faster shutter speed to eliminate blur, had I not decided that the blur, grain and color distortion of the foil helped attribute to a rushed (war-correspondent-on-the-move), raw, viscious sense of... well... combatant conflict!

The original image was a lot less red and a lot more orange ;) Levels, Gamma, Color Balance, Channels and Unsharp Mask were the tools of choice in Paint Shop Pro.

~

Reflecting on the image I can conjur many interpretations - "Tidal Wave of destruction", Nuclear annhiliation, Western Dominance, Economic Oppression, the Leviathan Superpower - only I am unsure as to whether being open to interpretation makes it successful or a failure... the conflict.

---

I apologies if I offend. Having refelected on the experience of the last year, on war and conflict, these are my feelings and I appreciate the opportunity to express them in this forum.

This was a really creative experience! Thankyou for introducing me to a new side of Photography.

Jarra.

Thankyou to all who voted and commented. Certainly a sobering experience, but one may confidently infer that in its majority, this is not an audience worth 'pleasing'. That said I remain excited and inspired to participate in coming challenges, producing challenging entries that may recieve some constructive criticism and commentary. Thanks DPCHALLENGE!

Very bold framing. Strong colour pallet.

... a plague? Blood money? I suppose that leads to conflict.

The title is too abstract, and the focus is on the sauce, not the penny. Nice timing on the shot, but perhaps a faster shutter speed would have helped (or some creative flash use)?

I like this. The borders are too much. On second thought I really like this. 9

Somewhat interesting as an abstract, but I don't see what you're going for. And the border is too thick and intrusive for my tastes.

Huh? I have been looking at this for about 5 min now and I still don't get it. Nope, don't get it...also you should try using a faster shutter to capture the splash better.

Can't understand what it is supposed to be

Nice shot of a penny dropping into liquid.

Confused as to what the penny represents? Is this to show blood, sweat, and tears?

I don't get it. Does not fit the challenge well - it doesn't say 'conflict' without an explanation. Even then, i don't get it.Show the pic to strangers, and say nothing. Ask "What is the first thing that comes to mind?" or even 'What is the conflict in this image?' and let me know if anyone gets it.

Not really sure what I am looking at but I do think the border is a bit much whatever it is.

Not sure I understand. Blood money?

That's one big ugly border... What is the shot supposed to be? A penny dropped into strawberry syrup? I'm not sure, but that is one big border...
