8 pounds of popcorn kernels popped in my wifes popcorn popper. That made three 13 gallon garbage bags full of popcorn. I laid a book shelf on its back, laid Rowan in the book shelf, and then covered her completely in popcorn. There is no cut our thing that her face is coming through. She is a good 8 inches deep in popcorn. Both she and Aidan had a blast playing in it afterwards like a sand box. Lit to the right with my 420 speedlight and a silver bounce umbrella fired with the 580ex master.
This was my initial idea when I saw the challenge come up. I figure others will do something similar, but I am hoping that the size of my model in comparison to the negative popcorn space around her is over the top enough to separate this image from the pack. I won't have high hopes though. I had high hopes for a couple of my previous entries that just aren't performing up to my expectations. I would love a mid 6 on this, but will most likely be a 5.8-6.1. People are probably getting sick of seeing my kids.
PP - RAW conversion in Lightroom, levels, several hue/sat adjustment layers along with selective color adjustment layers, NI, USM, back to Lightroom for shadow/highlights adjustments and then back to PS for cropping, resizing, more USM and more NI. The file size was huge and I had to save it at 50% optimum when saving for web. Because of that the details are a bit onthe soft side. The full size version is pretty danged sharp. Love that Tamron.
Post Challenge - For a whole 24 hours I get to see pics of each of my kids on the front page. Never thought that would happen. In the last 24 hours of voting and rollover I lost over .1 in my score, which is a huge loss after 300 votes. Whatcha gonna do - not complaining about the blue. ;)
TY all for your votes (this challenge had a major effect on my overall average) and all the comments. 54 I think before rollover. Pretty wild.
Well, not to be disrespectful, and since no one else has mentioned it, why did you not arrange the popcorn to cover the what looks like skin to the left of her lovely face? I guess it should not distract me.
edit: on further review, I think it is popcorn hull...still distracting :)
There's my sweet little girl. On the front page right where she belongs...along with my little sweet boy...front page all the way baby!! Now what should the next goal be...hmmmmmm.....how about all four of the "clan of too" on the front page together? Never say never! Good show Sweetie! Adding to favorites of course!
Nice job and congrats Tim. I thought this one might be yours - I am beginning to recognize your kids. Very well done in a challenging challenge. Popcorn isn't the most exciting topic and you did a nice job bringing it to life.
You can only pray and dream of something like this! What an achievement Tim! Your two kids on the front page!!! The story is fantastic. Make sure you do a PRINT SCREEN and frame it! Love your work mate, God Bless You!
PERFECT concept, and a PERFECT result.....
Loved the story behind the image, and Rowan is so precious, and so pleased you won the BLUE worth this awesome image Tim.....
Congrats on having both kids on the front page at the same time! You've definitely proven yourself as a powerhouse at DPC. Now get that studio up and running.
I love it. A well framed shot, and a priceless look on the face. I bet you owe this little one for sitting still long enough to make this happen :) Focus and light are right on the money for my taste and the definition of all the corn isn't lost like so many shots in this challenge. My top so far.
Too cute. For some reason that little hole on the left side (at nose level) bothers me a little. If I were you I'd clone in a popcorn there so then you could get DQed. :P
nice idea....this would have been one of my dreams as a child...lots of butter please! I'm giving you a 10 for creativity....a 10 for your wonderful model, and a ten for the photo overall.
I am adding another thought---this photo was the best by far in my opinion...you should ribbon with this. I voted on all of them, and most were plain and uninspiring!
great idea, you should reshoot this as the classic shot from american beauty with a mature blond woman. This one is not bad either, although a little overexposed. 7
