Challenge: Textures II (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Minolta DiMAGE A1
Location: Kitchen
Date: Feb 12, 2004
Aperture: 56/10
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/25
Galleries: Still Life, Macro
Date Uploaded: Feb 12, 2004

My first submission. I found it really hard to find a subject to match the challenge - cudos to those that do it twice a week!

I set the scene in the kitchen (best light) the origional pic had 8 pipes but the 'texture' element seemed to be lost even with 8 different grains of wood.

Thanks for all your comments, I guess 4.2 is a decent starting point. If I get time I may retake the picture using your suggestions (focus is a pretty basic one lol). Looking forward to your comments in the fire challenge.

lighting and focus not very sharp - good idea though!

An interesting texture, would have liked to see a bit more at the top perhaps.

over exposed by quite a bit - levels could fix it.

The picture looks like the color is faded. No real crispness to it.

This is a very nice composition for the challenge. The colors are very dull though. I think that this might be a lighting issue, but it could just be that it needs a boost in levels... As far as the textures go, you need to be just a bit more creative in the lighting. Instead of from above, shine your lights in from the side. This would help to create more shadows and thus more depth.

Not sure I like the soft focus or the lighting on this piece...

would like the tobacco crisper (i'm finding the red and white stops my eye from moving into your frame) creative idea and great texture on the pipe

Interesting idea, but the exposure just wasn't there. The white balance is pretty far off- maybe grayscale would have worked better.

Lighting is a little harsh. The image overall seems a little bright

I see the texture, but the subject and composition just don't hold my interest.

Noise takes away from this image.

lower gamma, increase sharpness. Should be very nice.

The lighting is a little harsh. To soften it up, maybe use a darker surrounding, and use a small flashlight to light it while using a long exposure (if your camera does that).

thats a lot of texture,,, picture lacks sharpness in areas, but that could be my screen, blur in the top and softness maybe takes away from the details, good subject though.....

Interesting idea, but the image quality is pretty awful

Intersting composition. Would benefit from sharper image and slightly stronger contrast.

Nice shoot. You choose a complex set of subjects to photograph. The DOF may be grather if the principal subject is the pipe. The backgound is very distractive due to a diferent set of objects and colors. But the yellow bar may be your principal subject, it fits to the rule of thirds. Resuming, this complex set blows out some of the score..

Seems to be out of focus...

Real depth of detail lost in that loss of sharpness - camera resolution, cropping or processing I've no idea. Kind of intersting subject, though rather chaotically organised - a very busy shot and the background doesn't help that at all. Close-cropping can be a great trick, but is only half-applied here.

[World Record Attempt]
+ There are textures.
- It seems focus is a little off. The yellow thingy distracts the attention from the pipe. I would prefer a more earthly tone to the subject.
