I missed it by that much. :( I went out to pick up a pinata for a Halloween party this evening and took my camera along "just in case" I walk out of the store and the sky is a gorgeous fiery orange. I jump in the Cruiser and head to the river which is about 10 minutes away. Alas, I was too late. But I stuck around anyways and took a few since I was there.
While I was shooting what was left of the sunset I heard all these little splashes. I took a look and saw all these little tiny fish jumping straight out of the water. Tons of them! I tried so hard to get a decent photo of them but I mostly got a lot of little rings in the water. I did manage to capture one but it's a pretty bad photo so I threw it in as an "extra" for today. It's cropped considerably and the fish is oversharpened but whatever. I'll probably go back sometime this month and try again.
So I get ready to leave and turn around a see a beautiful crane sitting at the waters edge. Undoubtably waiting to feast on these little fishy once I get out of his way. Fauna pops into my head! I slowly turn to take a few but it's too dark by this time. I try to sneak a bit closer, throw on my flash hoping to get off at least one shot before he takes off. But I'm not stealth enough and away he flies. I only managed a couple of very blurry photos not even worth posting.
The colors are amazing. I can only imagine what it must have looked like with all the color in the sky. It looks so deserted and peaceful there. Love the fish story. That must have been one sight to see. Unfortunate that you didn't get the crane, maybe next time! :o)
Really nice sunset, & a great story to go along with it. Why does it always seem like you see the neatest stuff when lighting (especially) is horrible!?
you had a great time on the banks of that beautiful lake .. as far as i'm concerned you didnt miss out at all, this scene is stunning .. i love how the clouds and the water enclose that gorgeous lighted area ... the boat on the shore in the dark is great ... is it even a boat ?? .. i'm thinking that my monitor is set too dark .. i tilted it and it became clear that the boat was a log !!... it still looks good tho .. :)
Oh my. You didn't miss at all - you hit it perfectly. This is sublime. This is light that holds all the magic of the day to keep it safe during the night. This is wonderfully, deeply real. Beats the crap out of oversaturated deep blue/orange sunsets in my book.
I must echo everyone else's comment and agree that the cool blue and golden tones are beautiful! I'm sure the sky would have been amazing a bit earlier, but this is amazing in a more peaceful way.
Ohmy. . .this is so beautiful! You can still see the sunset colors in the water, and I love the night time blue. This is a gorgeous dusk/night photo. I think equally as good as if you had caught the sunset in its peak.
The blue/yellow colors always work well together. I don't have any water that's particularly close to me other than a creek (without driving several miles to get to a lake) so getting to see this vicariously through you is NICE. We call that "buttermilk sky." I think it's beautiful.
This turned out quite well. I love the high contrast between water and sky/land. Nearly every time I'm out shooting sunsets the photogs and non-photogs leave right after sunset. They are missing some of the best moments - the 30 minutes or so after the sunset.
