This is Smudge. She's not 18 -- but she is 12 -- but as spry and frisky as when she was a kitten. She and my dog, Milly roll around all over the place and play.

When Richard submitted his award winning photo of his calico, I was inspired then to try to take a good photo of Smudge and get her in a challenge -- I couldn't have picked a more talented photographer -- or a more outstanding photo to emulate. It may have been presumptuous to even try, but I guess that's what this challenge is all about.

i've looked at this one of yours before but didnt comment coz i was feeling a bit low .. when i'm feeling that way i cant put across sufficiently well how i feel about a photograph .. i'm feeling fine right now so i can say quite easily ..... BRILLIANT .. !!!
love the eyes especially ..
you are a killer photographer .. amazing .. your work with children and animals is to die for .. i think someone in the movie industry said something along the lines 'never work with children and animals' .. he couldnt have been as talented as you .. i think it may'v been alfred hitchcock !!!!! .. of course his was a different medium .. i'm being very flattering i know .. but i admire your work so much ... :) ..
anyhoooo the eyes are amazing .. how you got that white dot in the middle is literally genius .. well at my level of expertise it seems that way !! .. those whiskers are wonderful .. smudge is an absolutely fantastic subject ..:)x
edit ... i spelt smudge's name wrong .. i had smidge !!

Sandy, I really love the mouth in this. It's like I am sitting here waiting for Smudge to speak. She looks like a big soft furry kitty. Beautiful picture!

I love this photo a lot, not only because I love cats, but because you can almost reach out and touch the softness. You have a way of creating these wonderful, sweet, soft, creamy photos! Just beautiful!

Wow. Great photo Sandy. I think your kitty looks much sweeter than Yanko's so the intensity in the eyes was different.

the rims of the cat's eyes look unusual

Love the precisely centered catchlights and mesmerizing expression. Bumping up a point as I comment. Excellent effort.

It is the amber golden glow of the cat's eyes that draw the viewer in for they are very hypnotic. Colors and lighting is great. The area that needs a tad more improvement is the sharpness in the details of this feline. The lack of sharpness is most noticeable on the whiskers of the cat. It's the sharpness in the detail that would move this from out of the above average category and into the stellar category. Generally a higher aperture (6.3 and above)and an ISO of 50-100 will give you a sharper DOF and greater detail. Of course, you would have to use a slower shutter speed and a cat is sometimes notorious for not cooperating when you want them too:-)None-the-less, good job on emulating the original.

Almost the same cat. I like it. But when compared with the original, it could be a little sharper.

Good shot! The softer aspect gives it something new. I'm on the fence as to which I like better, this one or the sharper one (i.e. 8 years). I think something in the middle would have been best. Good luck!

Dang! This looks JUST LIKE the cat done by Yanko! Uncanny! Bravo to you for an excellent re-capture! *8*

Your cat had a great resemblence to Yanko's cat, and you've nailed the catchlights in the eyes dead-on. I give Yanko's shot the edge for it sharpness.

Absolutely beautiful except the catchlights, which look fake.
