This is a macro shot of the fruiting head of Western Salsify (Tragopogon dubius).
My title is a play on words...an achene (pronounced a keen')is a dry one-seeded fruit that doesn't open at maturity. For example, sunflower seeds, strawberry seeds, and dandelion seeds are also achenes.
The roots of this plant have the flavor of oysters or parsnips and may be eaten raw or cooked. The milky juice has also been used for chewing gum and for treating indigestion.
this is great...
your lens compression contributes a beautiful effect to an awesome composition. This also is a favorite weed of mine, a shy, timid but spectacular bloomer, the seed puffs tend to be most often photographed.
Here is a little gallery of mine devoted to this plant: Tragopogon dubius
Here is another view of the goats's beard by dsidwell that is also especially good:
Beautiful image the sharpness and textures are a testament to that lens. I like the color offset of the green background softly bleeding through the splines of the flowers.
Fascinating. Love the patterning and textures. Hey one on these made this week's MSNBC This Week In Pictures. Neat plant. Would love to do one ....where are they?
