Challenge: Spinning (Basic Editing)

You don't know how hard it was to get an entire mall to spin.

Brand new mall just opened in Wiesbaden next to the train station. Malls are not a common thing in Germany. So lots of folks were out checking out the place on Saturday. Set a sorta focal point, then as I clicked the shutter I rotated the camera. Much easier than rotating the mall, I might add.

In light of the basic editing allowance to clone out dust spots, I did indeed clone out a dust cow. (Way larger than a dust bunny.) I noticed it on a lot of these shots since I was shooting at a much smaller than normal aperture. Also did curves, contrast, hue/sat, crop, sharpen, resize, convert to sRGB profile, border, save for web. Darn near wore me out, too.

Very interesting shot. Definitely shows spinning well. I think this would be a great abstract shot.

A wonderful sublime photo. I love it, just enough detail to see what is going on and just enough blur to stir a ton of emotion. Terrific how the one person is in the motion of looking back. I love the colors a ton. Really, a superb photo.

Your blur shots are awesome. Why this scored so low is beyond me, but you should see my Free Study score. ROFL

a good shot but i can see why it did not vote well, i was in the same mind set until i got what DPC voters were after, There is tow ways to go, Take a picture that will be DPC friendly for that i went to past challenges and studied for about two weeks.
Take shots you alone are happy with and stuff the score. As i am in the WPL5 league my shots on here will be friendly, anything else is for me alone.

What a cool technique! Man. With the shutter only open .6 of a second, you must have been spinning that succer at break-neck speed. I'm impressed, and think this turned out very well!

I like this one Melethia. It has so much motion! Makes me spin just looking at it!

This could have been in the fitness challenge-new sport of mall spinning. I feel a photo series in the making-god only knows how many malls there are in PA and NJ.

For what it's worth Melethia:
I still believe this was the best picture in the challenge and I'll never understand how it didn't at least make top-10.

Melethia, I didn't vote in this challenge. Just saw the picture now.

I like it verry much but it's defenitly not a DPC friendly.

The only suggestion I have is to remove the white triangle in the left bottom corner. It’s the only still element in the picture and attracts the attention. Maybe a square crop?

Positives:
Colors vibrant. Very smooth motion and flow conveyed in the image.

Technicals:
Harder to evaluate with this image because of the large amount of motion. Sounds wierd to say but the motion smoothness looks very good technically. There is very little, though that is in focus so hard to evaluate that part.

The Challenge:
It is definitely spinning and certainly meets the challenge. However, images that have mostly blur in them without a central focal point that is in sharp focus typically do not do well at DPC. Lacking this probably hurt this image in voting more than anything else. In a motion image viewers often need something sharply focused to grab onto visually. Yours is more abstract than anything else. Also, the title suggests a mall but it is not apparent in the composition. DPCers might have felt your title was concocted strictly for voting.

Suggestions:
This image is probably about as good as it can be. There are a lot of nice things about it, including that it captures spinning very, very well. But next time take and select a spinning image that has a sharply focused central component to better command viewer attention.

I like this for the abstract nature but I think for me, even less detail in the centre would have improved it - good luck

I'll tell you this much. You'd score higher if the voters could tell what the photograph is. It looks like you have a nice clear shot. A little too much spin, perhaps. It looks like it would've turned out nicely otherwise.

I'd like to see a bit more detail in the photo, but that being said I love the concept, very creative and artsy!

This is very cool. You must have hung it from its strap and used the timer? You've achieved a very convincing composition - strong in color, design and content.

I like the double meaning here. Nice colors and composition.
