I wanted to try something new in editing and I found this tutorial by lesgainous called Tone Mapping Emulation (in Tutorials on DPC)so thought I'd try it out. Apparently it is similar to HDR merging but with only a single Tiff file. I'll let you read it for yourself. Not really sure it accomplished all that much with this image.
After the Tone Mapping I applied the following steps: Levels to set black and white tones, Dodge and Burn layer to darken highlights and create a vignette, Color Balance layer to reduce overall reds, Hue/Sat layer to reduce color saturation, USM, Resize, USM again, Desaturation layer again, Sharpen tool on edges of trees, Save for Web.

I think what really helped this the most (though I quite like the original) is the crop. You've brought the kids closer to the viewer. The original colors are fine and are good here as well. Mostly I like the joy of this shot. That's something you can't add with processing. :-)

You had a very good photo with which to start, and I think you made the most of it! Looks like a professional photo shoot - I'm impressed!

you've really made the children the subject of your photograph rather than the slippery dip and stuff .... great shot to start with, and the expressions are priceless ... it certainly a photograph to treasure ...

You really turned up the "Good Pic" slider on this one. This image will be giving your family a lot of smiles for a long time to come. It just looks like the whole essence of childhood outdoor play you have captured in one image. Great shot to begin with, and even better now. The crop helped a lot too.
