For this challenge I decided that I wanted to use my new red shoes. I went to the top of the Empire State Building over the weekend and took a shot looking straight down. Then I printed twelve 11 x 17 sheets and taped them together on the ground. I stood on top of a piece of wood that I spray painted silver so that my red shoes would stand out against the background. I'm hoping this looks realistic enough for the voters! :-)

Thank you all for your helpful comments and votes! I'm learning a lot and next time I'll watch out for those shadows under my feet. I'm happy many of you liked the idea.

Greetings from the Critique Club.

Firstly, well done on a very creative shot. A great idea that is well executed.

At first glance you pull off this shot as you intended. We see a person standing on a board over a city. When we look a little longer we see two things that spoil the illusion you are trying to create. The first is the shadows under your feet, as many commenters have already pointed out. The second is that a couple of the seems in the paper are visible (theres really only one area near the top left that stands out).

Composition is good with strong lines and the city streets leading to the feet too!

Overall, ok lighting (other than the position that caused the shadows, and that the shoes are not evenly lit), good composition, good colours (or colour in this case), good idea, good exectuion.

PM me if you have any questions.

I liked this shot alot and thought it was one of the most creative of the challenge. With all of the great comments you received I'm sure there will be more and better to come from you. Good job!

The positioning of you off lighting unit kinda gives the shot way. Moving the light a little to the left would not have caste the shadow on the photo

Very cool photo, great effect. There is one problem - the city is still visible on the other side of the board, which makes it look like a board lying on top of a b&w photo of a city. You have to look very closely to notice it though. Still a wonderful effort. 8.

Nice concept, but too bad you see the shadow of her feet..

Watch the shadows of the feet. The fact that they can be seen makes the shot look very unrealistic.

very good idea, however the "execution" not so good. the shadows of the feet destroy the illusion of altitude.

is it a book? is that the fold on the left?

mind-boggling, until your mind recovers and realises that the shoes are casting *huge* shadows on the scene below. :D aside from that, very innovative and effective. :)

If it weren't for the shadows of her shoes, i would have thought it was real.

I like the idea but it loses it's secret and perspective due to the shadows under the shoes.

Great idea and composition. Perhaps revisit the lighting? I find that the shadows cast by the shoes are a bit distracting and this takes away from the overall effect. Still, cool shot!

cool idea. however, the effect gets ruined for me by the shadows under the shoes (although perhaps this is just an incredibly enormous woman ;) and the choice of the painted wood beam. think you were going for the idea that it was a metal beam, like on a building under construction, but if you could have figured out how to make this look more like a high ledge it would have made the illusion better.

The shadows are giving away your technique.

the shadows of feet covering half a city block give away the illusion... underfoot fill light would have helped

eeeee.. I'm getting dizzy.lol. I think I would have put something black in between the silver board & the edge to make it look more like she's truly standing on a ledge. Fantastic idea & really fun & well executed. My first 10 for the challenge.

THis was a nice attempt, a good thought I should say but the shadows below the feet give it away that it is fake, and in tunr makes it a not so good image. 4

nice idea, but the lighting makes it unrealistic, there are shadows on the photograph and the direction of light differs from that one on the photo
