Composition is good, this photograph is telling me that it is a letter to dear john, focusing on the pencil.
Background: the words on the left side are a bit washed out and not uniform with the rest. The left side of the pencil is also washed out a bit.
Technical: the focus is mainly on the pencil, where it should be, as the point of interest. The 2 rings are also clearly in focus and adds to the overall feel of the photograph.
Good use of B&W, maybe needs more contrast.
Overall, a vey well taken emotional photo.

I really like to see a good setup...this tells so much of a story and I love it. The letter....the wedding set....the nervously chewn pencil. I love the contrasts and the detail...great job. 9

Nice composition and excellent use of black and white. Also like the hi key effect.....not quite sure why the lettering is more faded on the left? Is that due to the exposure setting? I'd be interested in learning more about how you used lighting for this study, as you faced similar problems that I had to deal with for this week's photo. Very nice and one of my favorites this week. 9 LanSnake

would have been even better if the left side weren't washed out

they say a photo is worth 1000 words. Its obvious that this photo is telling a story. I would give it a 15 :)

I think the 'divorce ambient' is not giving anything to the picture (in this challenge at least) and the pencil is anecdotal besade him. Too far of challenge meeting. (6)

Wow, great job.

Very good storytelling! The arrangement works well; it is balanced, clean, and sharp. The one nitpick is that the text seems to have gotten somewhat washed out by the lighting. Might have worked better with multiple lights or a bit more diffusion on the key light.

First, my dumb, but I don't get the title. Sad message, well portrayed in B&W. The rings are exceptional! I find viewing the writing is inconsistant. On the left, it's very hard to read, while on the right, it's very clear. Poor john.....

This picture has a bleak feel to it (assume it is purposeful) and I like teh detail shown on the pencil and rings. Maybe a touch blown out on the left, but I'm not sure if that is detracting or not. karmat

excellent black and white... I love the contrast and the shadows on the pencil. The rings also add a really nice touch to this 'dear john' letter. The only thing I don't like about this image is that the handwriting has not maintained an even level of darkness in the photo.. This is probably due to the post processing... good shot :) = 9 - jmsetzler

I like your idea for this photo. The angle is great, although I might have pulled it back a slight bit, maybe to get the D in dear all the way into the photo. The Rings and the pencil are very clear, but the wording kind of gets lost to the left. I don't think it would need to be totally clear, but it seems like it's almost been lost from the photo. Maybe you meant to do it that way, I guess we can see the parts that are important in understanding what the photo is about. The rings are beautiful. Very nice and good luck in the challenge.

Like the use of B&W, and well cropped.

I love this - great detail, perfect lighting, wonderful framing. I'll be very disappointed if this doesn't do well.

great focus and lighting on the pencil but it is so distracting not being able to read all of the writing. I curious/nozy and want to know what it says. I like your idea.

I tend not to like photos where the interest is based solely on what is written on something within the photo, but this one caught my eye before I even read it. It's very emotional even without reading the text. I love the fading (stronger lighting?) at the top left and the way the rings are cropped just there.

John probably doesn't mind you're leaving him since he's spending all his time at dpc or maybe you do! Nice image, good execution. 6 Journey

A beautiful b/w shot. Superb detail and great cropping.

This is a really well taken shot. I love the composition, I love the clarity and I really like the use of black and white - adds drama.

Good concept, but what does the title mean? I like the B/W for this photo, but perhaps a bit more contrast.
