This was a fun shot. I knew people were going to have real pencils in their pictures so I wanted to do something different. I only hope people will see the irony in this photo.

Sorry, I don't see the pencil.

that is not a pencil??????????
08/24/2002 04:45:00 PM
Not the proper forum for such humor.

If 1's was your objective with this snapshot you have succeded. I only wish I could have given it a zero. I doubt you just stumbled upon this contest, saw the challenge topic and took this sophomoric picture of a poor representation of a horse cock. As you well know, the origional topic was a number 2 pencil, later changed to be any grade of pencil because of the difference in the global numbering system for lead pencils. Your using some slang interpretation is idiotic. Do you spend a lot of time at Allbangedup.com? This snapshot should have been DQ'd by management for being off topic. This if far too liberal. Have you always had trouble understanding and following instructions? Do you see you are the only entry that fails to understand the topic?
If my comment hacks you off, I am sorry----sorry I didn't post it Monday so you could have been hacked all week.
Try a little harder to stay with the topic next time and not pick some goofey off the wall meaning of "children". Maybe something your mother would be proud of you for entering. You might work on your focus too. If you ever really NEED to photograph this part of a horse, try laying underneath. (face up)

At first, my opinion was that this did not meet the challenge, as you know many people wondered about that. However, it was brought to my attention that the definition of pencil would allow this to qualify. So, setting that aside, on to the photo. The angle and lighting are good. The red and white bar is kind of blocking the um...subject. However, there is a humor factor in there with the sign in the background of the subject. I have to imagine the looks you were getting while trying to take this photo. It took balls to get this photo. (no pun intended). Not something I would hang in my livingroom, however the photo is well executed. Good luck in the challenge.

This is certainly not *my* definition of a pencil, but I'm giving you points for trying!! lhall

From posts I've read, I know what and where the pencil is, so I guess you sure meet the challenge. Artistically it doesn't appeal a whole lot to me because of the drab colors with little contrast other than the little bit of red. I do like the cobblestones. Between that and the horse it has a bit of an old fashioned feel. Technical merit...well, as I mentioned not enough contrast to make the subject pop...no pun intended...and the focus is a little soft.

Took a second to realize ... but funny!

Composition - fair, sign seems out of place
Technical Aspects - good
Meets Challenge - technically yes, but .. ?
Visual Impact / Originality – high/high
Other suggestions – if penis was your focal point, then lighting could have been much better. Striped bar also hurts.

I`m not sure I get it...
08/21/2002 03:57:00 PM
What the heck is the point of this photo? Have I missed something? If it is what I think it is, for this site, for these challenges, this is in bad taste.
08/21/2002 10:05:00 AM
Is the word 'pencil' that hard to understand?? why do you use it in other ways? a pencil is a pencil.
08/20/2002 07:55:00 PM
O.K. let's start with an apology. Sorry for using your photo as an example. I didn't see the pencil, nor did I have any clue that pencil derived from penis (but looking at the two word written, I should have guessed). That said, your new review:
Focus appears to be on the red/white striped bar. The straps and harness shadow the rest of the subject, suggest a flash to help there. 5 Swash
08/20/2002 04:33:00 PM
Disgusting, inappropriate, doesn't even come close to meeting the challenge.
08/20/2002 03:18:00 PM
After looking through the dictionary, I understand what you were shooting for... I have to congradulate you on an original, different perspective... However, I don't care much for the execution... There were so many things competing for attention that I had a hard time figuring out what you were shooting for... I spent a long time trying to figure out what the sign had to do with a pencil, since that seemed to be the dominant aspect...
08/20/2002 11:12:00 AM
huh? i know that's not constructive but it's all i can think of...i just don't get this...
08/20/2002 09:16:00 AM
Ok, I can appreciate the humor here, and if you could've gotten him to hold a real pencil with it, I'd stand up and applaude and give you a 10. And it'd be in the upper half it were a good pic of his pencil....the parking sign is very distracting....maybe if you'd zoomed in on the main subject of the picture a bit more, (i can't believe I'm critiquing a horse's willy), lol, I hope this doesn't start a trend here....we'd have to change the meaning of dpchallenge (deviate pencil challenge). ;)
08/20/2002 09:08:00 AM
I don't see the pencil nor do I care to look at a horse's underside.
08/20/2002 08:28:00 AM
Umm, no.
08/20/2002 02:21:00 AM
This image is just vulgar and is merely a low level snapshot. It has no redeeming values whatsoever. 1 Journey

Ive looked and looked and looked but i can't find a pencil. 2.
08/19/2002 08:05:00 PM
Where is the Pencil???
08/19/2002 06:41:00 PM
It ok to be daring,. provocative and different. but this is absurd. plain and simple a bad photograph. just so you know the 3 has nothing to do with the horses "pencil"...
08/19/2002 06:38:00 PM
Err. That's definately original. I think it's a bit childish, but original. 3 -lennier
08/19/2002 05:47:00 PM
So do you have a real pencil?
08/19/2002 05:12:00 PM
Understanding of this photo and how it relates to the challenge comes from the forums. This one scores low for me just because I don't find the photo appealing, since I now get the concept of pencil you are using!

This one is different. The photo seems a bit dark. Where's the pencil?
08/19/2002 12:33:00 PM
ok, i've read the discussions in the forums, i understand there's a 'pencil' in this shot, but IMHO, this does not meet the intent of the challenge (which was to include a writing implement kind of pencil), so i will be voting you low, sorry. as for the photo, the sign looks a little overexposed, and i'm not sure i like the cropping, but then, i haven't taken a photo of a horse's pencil as the main subject, so what do i know. -- gr8photos (2)

I see what you are trying to do, but don't see a pencil (2)
08/19/2002 05:37:00 AM
I don´t get it. please help me with this one i´m puting a 1 on it and you have to send me a e-mail if i´m missing something so I can look at it again. -rocco22-

Can't find the pencil.
08/19/2002 03:25:00 AM
UPDATE: Okay, so given all of the hullabaloo on the forums about pencil-dicked horses, I now see the error of my thinking. So, despite the fact that I still don't think this meets the challenge, I thought I would offer some thoughts on the composition: both the sign and the red/white strap pull my eye away from the "pencil" -- so much in fact, that I didn't even notice it upon first viewing. The sign is unfortunate. That happened to be where the horse stopped. The strap could maybe have been avoided by crouching for a slighly lower upward angle. I would also like to see the horses tail in the photo, but of course there may be other stuff cropped out with it. Sorry, score was unaffected by my enlightenment.

ORIGINAL: I looked and looked and looked, but I just don't see it. 3

I've caught your attempt at a pun, and I definitely don't like it. I think you've missed the point of the challenge.

cute.... not very appropriate for this challenge... - jmsetzler
