Challenge: Pencil (Classic Editing)
Camera: Casio QV-4000
Location: My Home
Date: Aug 18, 2002
Aperture: f/2.3
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/472
Date Uploaded: Aug 17, 2002

Postprocessed so that only the color of the pencil stands out.
The drawing tries to resemble a swan. I'm not good at drawing ;-)
The soft focus was done with the "Soft focus" mode of the "Best Shot" automatic of my Casio.

Thanks again for your comments. Never got so many before :-)
BigSmiles got it. I chose this soft and fuzzy focus to distract from the hand and the drawing and to draw attention to the pencil only by the colour. So no I won't make it sharper or show more details of the hand ;-)
I agree with hbunch7187, I would have liked to light the shadows inside the hand more. But I had only one lamp and another one would have cast another shadow on the pencil and I think multiple shadows look bad. Oh well... I wonder how professional photographers solve such problems ;-)
I saw a photo which used the same technique. It was on a beach and there was only a red cloth in contrast to the sepia toned beach background. I was astonished by the effect. So I tried it, too. It's my first photo here on DPC where I felt that I was able to actually do the photo the way I imagined it in my mind.
I didn't like how the colour came out, too. Too neon and almost green. But I still learn The Gimp and wasn't able to fix that at this time.
I'll post a description how I did the postprocessing effect to the forum.

I have a special interest in this photo, because I was asked to try out your description of how you got this effect in the Gimp. That was so much fun! It came out like magic :). I'm very impressed by this (not that I wouldn't have been before). I also love the composition, and the soft focus and gentle lighting on the hand. I'm giving it 10 - lisae

Please let us know how you got rid of the color in the b/w part. I'd like to know that technique...

This photo is definately original and the post editing is very creative. The photo is at a good angle making the pencil the subject and not the drawing. lots of similar photos this week that were pretty much a photo of a drawing and stuck a pencil in to meet the challenge. i wonder how many of the drawings will get judged rather than the photos. Oh well. I do have to wonder how you did this because when I invert the photos colors to make it easier to look at, the entire pencil doesn't show color. The hand is a bit dark in relation to the pencil. other than that, lighting and focus are good. Good luck in the challenge.

This looks like what I did with my shot "Rest." Desaturating certain channels. Looks cool here.

cannot see how you could achieve this shot without post editing part image - unles this is a sandwich of 2 images - neither of which have been partially post edited. Looking forward to seeing your explanation. accepting administrator guidance 9.

i love the soft focus here....the pencil colors a bit odd and i wish the lighting weren't quite so strong on the thumb and index finger :P Great composition 8 Lisa

I'm quite interested in learning how this was done within the bounds of the rules -- very cool!

excellent work...

You'll definitely have to post this picture in the forums with a description of how you did this once the challenge is over.

There's a bit of a greenish cast to the pencil. Really, the best way to do this effect happens to be illegal, so good job on figuring out a way to do it within the rules.

The neon-look of the pencil is amazing and makes this a special phoot.

Don't know if I like the color though ....

Ok! If I give you a high score will you tell me how you did this?
08/20/2002 03:34:00 PM
The pencil color is a little too bright, but the effect is really neat.

Wow, is that bright! I'd love to know how you did that!

Nice colour, I think this works with the soft focus, like the appearance of colour washing within a black and white print. The sketch included at the bottom is too messy (for me) and pulls it down a couple of points. Just my opinion though.

PS Looking forward to finding out how you achieved this interesting effect.

This is a great shot – needs only to be a little sharper. It'll be interesting to know how it was done… (8)

plaing with curves, uh?... cool

a little overexposed and the saturation is creative but odd.

Wait a second. Did this guy read the rules? This is a clear violation. But it's a very good picture other than that. - 7
08/19/2002 01:43:00 PM
Did you spot edit?
08/19/2002 12:46:00 PM
I understand what you are going for here, it looks to pixelated due to the restrictions of the rules. This would be an excellent shot if the colors could be manipulated with spot editing. -7

Really great! So soft and gentle (I'm sure you're getting a lot of-focus could be better) - very artistic work. The technique goes right along with the image that is being sketched. Love how the pencil is illuminated. Wonderful job 9

The soft focus is soo very obviously used on purpose in this picture. It does a good job of fuzzing out what the person is drawing to focus the attention more on the pencil. And the brightness of that pencil is almost scary! it's glowing!!! Was that the pencil itself that did that?

This is a neat photo, but I don't know how it was achieved without spot editing. Assumint that it was not spot edited for the color, I think the lighting and soft focus here is very nice. - jmsetzler
