I see where you were going...

I think for this to have truly worked for me I'd have like the train to have the front heading towards us and the car - that would have made the heart race and perhaps think less about the other details.

Hope that makes sense.

It's cool, but weird! That's waht's nice about this project.....we can try this stuff on each other and the worst that'll happen is we'll tell each other the shot's weird! It is a really good job of melding the two pics.....I am just having some trouble tying them together.

Very cool post processing although the scene is a little disconcerting for my mind to wrap around.

It is definitely different. I do like the sepia type tone to it. I'm not too sure about the windshield on the car, it becomes a bit distracting.

its good, I like the brown tones through out, maybe you could have faded the top of the bridge into the tree more, other than that very nice :)

I like it. (But then, I like digital art!)

The blend of the bridge and train tracks looks a little off; but I like the colors you brought out.

Wow - gotta hand it to you for experimenting! This is inspiring and thanks for the little tutorial down there. I like the image - it's edgy and the idea is fun - car driving into train - good job. It could perhaps be a bit cleaner, but I'm sure you know that yourself. Overall it "messiness" works with the image, though.

Neat composition, the sky looks a little funky above the train but I think it works well with the image. Nice job

I can see that this sort of photo-melding would be useful for an advertising image, in a way similar to the artwork in ads of the 1950's and 60's. It is good to be learning how the tools work to get this to happen in the digital domain. It's a bit disconcerting to see the bare tracks ahead of the cars, as it would be a rough ride just ahead for them.
Are the one lane bridges common in your area of the world?
Nice doodle!

answer to hipychik
two photographs .. increase width of canvas size in one image to 200% and bring in other photograph ... played around with different layer effects ... duplicated the train layer and scaled it up to cover the entire image .. i did this because if you have no details underneath a layer that you've changed from normal to say overlay, colour burn, colour dodge or wotever, then it wont work ... those sorts of layers have to have something going on underneath them .. like if you have just plain white or black then nothing will show at all ... its different for the different types of layers tho ....
i selected luminosity for both the train and car layers .. i then skewed the car so that it aligned better with the train layer, and then skewed the train layer to fit better with the car one ..
i did an adjustment layer in levels and made the sky a lot more dramatic, i then erased in that adjustment layer everything except the sky .. to erase in an ajustment layer i select the pen and use black and if you erase something by mistake then you draw over that area in white .. i think .. i havent got photoshop open right now and my memory totally sucks ..
i erased the edges of the bridge to merge better with the train tracks ..
i think i would have resized and merged the layers at this time and then i think i did a colour balance to give it a browner look ... i then brought in a photo of some bricks that i took and made them an overlay layer .. i scaled this layer up very very big .. and would've taken the opacity down to 70% or something ....
i then linked the brick layer and the image of the train and car and resized it so that it was more square because it was too long and thin and images in dpc dont go well like that imo ....
then i reckon i would have resized and merged the layers again and sharpened then border then saved for web .......

this is only approximate!!!

there are probably much better and quicker ways of achieving the result i want, but at this level of knowledge , these actions are the best i can do .. i am really wanting to learn how to use MASKS but i find the info in help etc very confusing .....

well, i think it works.
I like it.
but then again, I'm a fan of this kind of processing.
you can hardly see the join between the two images!
and of course, the transportation theme joins the two images together also.
the only minus I can really find is that the car is too "new" and doesn't really fit with the PP theme of "old".
although I doubt you could arrange to get an old car to pose on the bridge for you.
but what about an empty bridge?

there you go, you asked for it :-)

I love the overall look of the photo, and I think the processing was way on the right track, but for my tastes (but that may just be me), but I would prefer a cleaner more natural looking sky, and cleaner on the cars -- even if the sky remains mostly sepia like it is, that would be okay, but more of the sky colors contrasted but clean. It looks like there's debris in the sky.

But on first impact when it popped up on my screen, I thought, "How cool" I like it. It was only after looking at it that I thought maybe just a little less on the sky.

Nice job tho -- isn't it fun getting to go wild in photoshop tho without worrying about voters! I love that :)

I really like how you did this. Maybe someday you could give me a little more detail on how you did it.

It looks very vintage style, and I really like the effect of the cars and the car bridge that right up against the train rail tracks that are going in a differant direction.
Awesome effect with leading lines going in two directions.
I love that.
I am not sure about the sky as it looks muddy, but don't have a suggestion to do it better or another way.
I really do like this image Roz.
