Challenge: Pencil (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot S30
Location: Pennsylvania
Date: Aug 15, 2002
Aperture: f4.9
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/40
Date Uploaded: Aug 16, 2002

Road construction behind my house for a housing development. It used to be a fairly large wooded area. Adjustments: Cropped & Resized, Levels, Unsharp Mask.
I would have liked a more detailed view of the pencil, but I really like the composition. On the other hand, I think the small size of the pencil adds to this, the bulldozer is big and the broken pencil is small = P The shot is at sunset, creating the light on the plants while the bulldozer casts a shadow on the dirt.

Explanation: The pencil is "just there" (broken by the bulldozer....not really). I thought the roots and the live trees would make more of a message. I wasn't going for anything with the pencil specifically. It was just in the way of the "modernization" caused by the bulldozer, just as the trees are/were. Thanks to those who tried to figure it out though ; )

I see the pencil... I'm not sure I understand the 'message' though... I understand the 'modernization' theme with the bulldozer making way for new things, but I'm lost on how the pencil fits in here... Maybe I'm just trying to figure out something that isn't there :) - jmsetzler

There is definately a pencil here. I'm not sure I understand, but I think it has something to do with how something used to be done, and how it's done now. In my opinion, it's not very visually appealing, however, my son loved the "big truck". Setting all that aside...The lighting is good, and the angle on the dirt is good. I wish we could see more of the bull dozer. Good luck with the challenge.

you definitely met the challenge, and you've used the selective DOF quite well, but - to me - the picture has very little appeal, sorry. also, i guess i don't quite get the title. the modernization probably relates to the heavy machinery and the pile of rubble. if you mean modernization from using old-fashioned pens, there's no link to what we are moving to. -- gr8photos (3)

I'm sorry, it doesn't appeal to me. Nice clean shot though.

Lighting is good on this shot. It seems to be a bit out of focus though.

This is an interesting idea and the light on the pencil and rubble is good. I like the green colour and light reflected there but the tractor thing seems too much in shadow. I think though this is interesting idea, the photo doesn't grab me visually.
