When I saw this challenge, the first thing that I did was to phone one of my customer located 6 hours north of my town to check with him if the Caribous did show up.

He told me that they were there, so I drove over... to see only one Caribou and the few pictures that I took were not very good. At least I saw lots of Grouses and this is a picture that came up pretty good.

AWESOME! you didnt rouse the grouse, but you sure did cpature him (and that's much better when you're trying to catch an image or 2 eh?)

I frequently do rouse these guys in the woods when I am X-country skiing; always startles me & then make sme LAUGH!

Enjoyed this very much Alain!

Compositionally, this is an excellent shot. The bird is located strongly on the lower right thirds and this lends balance and strength to the shot. Also, the limbs included not only add the "natural" context needed, but the snow adds extra interest to the shot.

Technically, this is spot on. The exposure is such that details show in the plummage, yet the snow isn't blown out, and you have maintained rich color tones. The focus on the bird is emphasized by the shallow dof and the lack of focus on the tree.

overall, this is an excellent shot that I'm surprised didn't score higher. Good work.

Wonderful bird! You can see why he would be hard to see in this setting as his plumage mirrors the snowy scene.

Nice. Wish the grouse stood out a little more from the surrounding branches. A small movement to the left perhaps?

Fantastic image... and either you have a very long lens or are unbelievably quiet in the bush. Great focus, fantastic DOF and considering the colours, I am amazed you managed to spot this beautiful specimen. Well done.

A really tough composition 'cause he's supposed to bland! You did a nice job of giving him some natural setting without losing him to the woods. Good DOF, good detail, pretty setting. Well done. 8
