Challenge: Motion Panning II (Basic Editing)
Camera: Pentax K100D
Lens: Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF
Location: Carousel at Pier 39, San Francisco
Date: Jan 14, 2007
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/10
Galleries: Family, Action
Date Uploaded: Jan 15, 2007

I love the slight blur in the dad's hand, as he's pointing out the child's mother. I was going to use my daughter as the subject, but she took an inside horse, and these people just happened to grab the horse on the outside ring, so I ended up shooting them instead.

I had pretty much given up on this competition when I stumbled upon this subject. I had an idea of shooting the cable cars in SF with a blurred background, but the subject was too big and I was either too close or too far, and there were too many tourists in the way with their point and shoots. I had my kids with me, so we wandered down to Pier 39, and then my youngest wanted to ride the carousel and, voila, inspiration.

Handheld with my 18-55mm lens set wide (18mm), ND2 filter on the lens. I was using time priority mode shifting between about 1/10 and 1/30 of a second. This one was at 1/10, and really shows the benefits of Pentax's built in anti shake!

Cropped right side, sharpened, resized, all in Irfanview.

Post-challenge edit: WOO HOO! 5th challenge entry and my first top 10, first over 6.0, and 2nd spot on the K100D list! Thanks for all the looks and kind comments. I really lucked into this image after almost giving up on this challenge. Thanks!

(Yes, it was a true panned image. I was standing outside the carousel and shooting as it went by ... The subjects were on the outside horse, and the center of the carousel is what's blurred in the background)

This is a great motion panning shot. There was another of a horse on a merry go round but it was shot on the moving merry go round, thus not motion panning. This however is such a warm and welcoming shot panning as the boy and his dad pass, so good I think so far this is my favorite.

Was this taken standing on the carousel rather than panning? It just looks different for some reason.

good panning.
but i think it would have been better without the man in there.
just my personal preference.

Great timing and a very nice capture. Had they been looking right at you would have made this an amazing pic but still very nice as it is. 7

I think the carosal is moving but the camera isn't - so I see the motion, but not the panning.

Like the perspective of this image. Decent clarity on your main subjects. Lighting, color and action are well captured.

This image has the appearance that it was taking from the moving platform and not from panning per se and perhaps some voters will think it is not 'true' motion panning.
