I was given this great photo to critique on behalf of the Critique Club. There isn't a lot I can say; it is certainly well-deserving of a blue ribbon! Part of its success was being in the right place at the right time with a capable camera. But this image represents your interpretation of a dynamic event and there are certainly a lot of good artistic and technical decisions behind the image as well. The colors are stunning, with nice detail in the aurora. The silhouetted skyline is sharp and interesting. The nearly square format works great. The noise in the aurora and bright lights on the ground don't distract from the overall image.

WOW...Magnificent!
I'm a "Desert Dweller", living in Arizona, and while we have some incredible sunsets to photograph, I can't imagine ever catching the same brilliance in colors from one of our sunsets that is so elloquently displayed in your Aurora Borealis photo. It makes me wish that I could have been there to see it! GREAT WORK!

This is a truly amazing photo ... I have never seen an aurora, but would love to do so while living in the northern hemisphere. Your photo is sharp and clear and yet has vibrant colour despite the night exposure. A very well-deserved win!

Superb Photo! Congrats on the win and consider yourself graced that you were able to see them. Here in Ontario we couldn't see them due to the cloud cover.

Well done! :-)

Your so lucky to have this kind of thing occur where you live. Unfortunatly, itll never happen here in south Florida.

Gonna use this as your christmas card? It has the right colors ;P
Very nice shot. I'm so jealous. I accumulated months of stays in the cold north of Sweden when my boyfriend lived there, but I only got to see the northern lights once. It was only the green and nowhere near as beautiful. Congrats on the ribbon.

thanks everyone :) it was an amazing night of auroras, and for those who might be wondering, i did no hue adjustments. Only some slight leveling (to actually tone down the colors) and crop/resize.

Beautiful Aurora shot! With the recent events, I figured someone would enter a shot like this. Unfortunately I didn't get to see it because of the cloud cover, but I can tell from your image that it was a beautiful event. I really like how you included the trees and the house at the bottom of time image, it gives the image a strong anchor from which the Aurora can shine. Beautiful shot.

11/03/2003 06:19:44 AM
Ah, I recognise this one from the forums. A stunning, opportunistic shot, my only negative is that I don't like the houses and lights at the bottom. I love the tree silhouettes though. I think it would have looked better with the lights at the bottom cropped out, but I think others may disagree. It feels a little shoehorned into the challenge though, because my attention is drawn to the light in the sky, which is definitely not infinite. Score: 7

Awesome. To be honest, if I hadn't seen photos similar to this in the last few days, with the Northern Lights being so amazing, I'd have had to say I thought it was a fake .... but these lights really are that amazing! I am jealous you got to enjoy such a magnificent display .... and took such a great photo. I love the way the buildings are lit against the black trees as well.

Yes, this should do quite quite well. I recently went to alaska for two weeks and NEVER saw the northern lights. The phosphorescence in the water was pretty cool though. :) Did you neat image this or was it a slow shutter with wind?
