Challenge: Something New (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot S30

As always, I took many shots from different angles and with different focal lengths and finally picked this one. I also intentionally over-exposed the shot to give it a more bright, happy feel since the subject matter is so ordinary and also because the pencil ends would otherwise be too dark.

I won't make the comment everyone else has made. I will say that I love the geometry of this shot.
08/18/2002 11:09:00 AM
Very cool! Love the white and yellow together. Great job!
08/18/2002 03:33:00 AM
this has the beginnings of a great shot. nice composition and i love the pattern. the lighting is a bit harsh and the bluish background area in the upper left corner really detracts from the overall feeling. i know it can be very hard to get a solid white background, though, so you did a pretty good job. good work.
08/17/2002 05:40:00 PM
I like this shot a lot, but I'm not sure I agree with your decision to overexpose it, I would have taken it down maybe 1/3-2/3, but that's just me. Nice composition and twist (no pun intended) on the challenge = )
08/17/2002 11:31:00 AM
Too bad you didn't wait a week and turn this in for the new challenge!!! THis is a really neat photo. The lighting is great!!! (8)
08/17/2002 10:55:00 AM
Congrats to a very nice photo and my condolences that you shot this photo one week too early ;-)
The lighting would be better if not only coming from the right side. There is a strange shadow in the background. Maybe a lamp illuminating the left side would have helped. I like the DOF.

what's up for next week? nice shot.
08/16/2002 06:52:00 PM
Man, outstanding for next weeks challenge! Good for this weeks too! 8 md
08/16/2002 04:05:00 PM
ouch...i bet you wish you'd held off on this one! great idea...new. it's a little blown out on the right and i can see texture on the left. I would like to see the entire 'bouquet' been in the frame. Great job
08/16/2002 04:02:00 PM
This picture is very eyecatching. I think the exposure is perfect and the slightly off center framing works well. Great picture!

Very simple but effective--good shot --andrewm

wonderful arrangement. Nice job!
08/15/2002 06:40:00 PM
Very cool arrangement. The background blowout seems like a good idea, but it did hurt one pencil (one of the cropped pencils in cropped at the bottom seems blurred, I think due to the blowout thing). Speaking of cropping, this would have been a good subject for a square frame instead of rectangle. One side in four shows all of the pencils to the tips, three others do not, to me, this is less than fully eye pleasing. Even so, this idea was very clever and well presented, so I am still going to award you an 8. (don't you wish you'd have held this shot for next week?) Swash

I like this style of photography, so that's a bonus already :)
Both the composition and colors are very attractive. At first sight, I thought the right part was to bright, but on second sight I think it isn't. If it wasn't for that brightness, the overall photo probably would look to flat.
08/15/2002 12:41:00 PM
I bet you are kicking yourself now for not waiting another week with this nicely done photo. The colors are nice, the connection to the challenge is there....Love the title.
08/15/2002 06:49:00 AM
Love this. Bet you wish you'd kept it for the Pencil challenge though. Light on the right is a little bright
08/15/2002 12:53:00 AM
i wonder if this picture gave the dpchallenge admins their idea for the next challenge? It's fabulous. How will you top it next week?
08/14/2002 11:59:00 AM
I just loved the design of this photo. Who ever thought a pencil could look like a flower?
08/14/2002 10:44:00 AM
I can't fault this picture, and next week I'd score it ten (really mean that). But I can't see the challenge connection – new pencils, new work of art perhaps. I really like it, I'll give the benefit of doubt score (8)
08/13/2002 05:52:00 PM
Something new.
Composition - quite good
Technical Aspects - quite good, right side a tad bright
Meets Challenge - yes
Visual Impact / Originality – quite good

Very Nice Photo! I liked this shot immediataly but wonder how it would look with a blue background given the contrast between the two colors. Just a thought.
08/13/2002 04:17:00 PM
You should have saved this shot for the next challenge :)

Very interesting. Bet you wished you'd saved this one for this week. Focus looks good. Lighting is good. Subject matter is good. Presentation is good. 7
08/13/2002 03:16:00 PM
Great job, sure you're wishing your idea had waited till this week. :)
08/13/2002 01:37:00 PM
I love the birghtness of this picture. I can almost smell the new pencils!
08/13/2002 08:27:00 AM
Very nice visual effect and color contrast. Don't like the blue on the left as a distraction.
08/13/2002 08:10:00 AM
Would have been good for this week ...
08/13/2002 12:08:00 AM
Very graphic. Love the "from the top" angle!
08/12/2002 10:23:00 PM
Perhaps you have a sixth sense as your shot is ideally suited to this weeks challenge.
08/12/2002 10:09:00 PM
nice spiral/ twirl effect going on - ironic with the new challenge :)

I really like this...to bad you didn't know the pencil challenge was comming up! I whish it were centered, though...or perhaps that was the effect you were going for? Regardless, its cool good job!
08/12/2002 07:13:00 PM
more apt for next challenge would have scored higher but I still rate iit highly
08/12/2002 06:18:00 PM
great pic! wouldve been perfect for the pencil challange ;)
08/12/2002 05:02:00 PM
and last but not least i know where the pencil idea come from, someone's been peaking
08/12/2002 04:54:00 PM
Very cool idea and wonderfully graphic. And my favourite colour is YELLOW! The left and right side aren't balanced, I find I want to move over to the left a bit.

08/12/2002 04:40:00 PM
Excellent picture. On my top 10. The illusion of curved pencils is great! A little shiny on the right.
08/12/2002 04:28:00 PM
Well, lemme just start by saying that I guess yer wondering "WHY ME!"... lol.. this would have been a very nice photo for the next challenge... But I guess you have already heard that and will continue to hear it throughout this challenge :) I'm giving this photo a 10 purely on its creativity. This image creates a tough lighting situation, but you seem to have managed that fairly well. The lighting coming in from the right side is a little harsh and the shadow on the left side looks a little strange... Your depth of field is excellent, as is the overall composition... At least you don't have to go shopping before you do the next challenge :) Great shot.. I hope I see this one as a high scoring finisher this week :) - jmsetzler

Can I swap eyes and artistic talent with you? The most impressive thing to me in this picture is the symmetry in this picture. The bluish background in the upper left throws that off a bit.

Too bad we didn't know that this week is "Pencils." I think you would have won.
08/12/2002 02:59:00 PM
Great job, and you already have a jump for this week! (bet you won't hear that much :-)) Compositionally, think it should be framed more to teh left, so that there is negative space on the right. That might make it look a little less overexposed as well. karmat
08/12/2002 02:52:00 PM
Hold on to your pencils.... And resubmit!
08/12/2002 02:01:00 PM
Nice composition - pity you can't enter it again this week!
08/12/2002 01:45:00 PM
beautiful! this sucks, I too sent something with pencils (your's is much better) it's obviuos were the next challenge idea came from...
08/12/2002 11:58:00 AM
Bet you wished you would have waiting till the pencil challenge on this. Great shot anyway...8
08/12/2002 11:24:00 AM
WONDERFUL - EXCELLENT (a little early for this week's challenge though-had to laugh a bit). Creative!!

Nice job; creative; meets challenge.
08/12/2002 09:09:00 AM
Great shot. Both on topic and good composition.
08/12/2002 08:48:00 AM
Works very well for this challenge, and would have worked even better for the next. When you do the final work of this you may want to spot edit out what I am assuming is what is left of a shadow after photoshop in the upper left.

aggghhhhhh!!!!!! OMGoodness!! Another entry a week too early... how weird is that?
08/12/2002 02:35:00 AM
You may get bored with pencils before this is over.....
08/12/2002 02:13:00 AM
Bet you wish you would have known about the pencil challenge ahead of time. I love this photo though. Definately depicts new. Tried some pencil pics myself and couldn't get anything appealing to the eye. You captured it perfectly. What's the blueish color in the top left corner? Shadow? Either way, high remarks from me. Congrats and good luck.
08/12/2002 12:40:00 AM
this should have been for the pencil challenge. nice composition.i like the twist it makes...makes me a little dizzy.
