Challenge: Something New (Classic Editing)
Collection: junk
Camera: HP PhotoSmart C315
Location: Art lab in basement
Date: Aug 8, 2002
ISO: 100
Date Uploaded: Aug 8, 2002

I don't have a real high quality camera, so I tried the magnifying glass trick to make my pic a little clearer. It worked a bit, although it's still kinda fuzzy. I'm hoping to get some "poor mans" tips to make the best out of what I have.
(I was trying to catch the "newness" of the crayons, as opposed to being used and all rounded on the tips) It was hard to get the box to cooperate in a way that was pleasing to the eye. It's offcenter to show the tab on the left to show that the box is still new too.

I appreciate everyone's comments. Sorry about the DOF, no control over that. (autofocus). Also, this was a really hard photo to take because the crayola wrappers are so grainy to begin with, that trying to make them look not grainy was really hard, and I didn't succeed very well. I know now why the other crayon photo went with NON crayola and with a brand with smoothe wrappers. Thanks a lot. My first challenge, I'm very thankfull for all the great comments and actually honored to have placed in the 40's. Thank you so much for the oppertunity.

I love the straight on angle this is shot. But I think the black background and the white surface are a little distracting. I would have gone with one or the other. But then thats just me.

I love these colors, they seem so bright and vibrant. By looking at the ends you can tell they are "New" (8)

School returns to mind. Great colours! However, the reference to the the challenge is not that obvious.

excellent photo concept :) I think this one may need a little more light to make the colors of the crayons on the right side of the frame punch a little harder :) - jmsetzler

Focal plane is maybe a bit too far back for this DOF, or maybe make the field a little deeper.

I like this picture lots. I love the perspective you have on the crayons. I was surprised when a couple people did crayons... that one never even occured to me, although it brings back great memories of childhood, when you first opened that box of NEW crayons, all sharp and bright! Nothing was more fun to color with than NEW crayons.

The shaft of the crayons seem in better focus than the tips. Also the glare of light in some places is distracting. Good choice of subject.

any newer and they'd still be in the unopened box!

I think i would rather see the tips of the crayons in focus, and the DOF falling out from there.

Composition good. It shows something new in an artistic way and with no major photographic flaws, in my opinion.

Brings back some very fond memories; I would say it is a 10, except that the black background doesn't really fit. My memories with crayons are not dark, they are just the opposite. Also, I would have liked to see more of the crayon--a higher angles might have been better. --9

I don't like the angle head-on. Maybe better from top or bottom.
