Greetings from the Critique Club
By Inspzil
Composition - Nice colorful array of stuff in a bowl. Not particularly compelling as a subject. But there are many great photographs of very boring things that do particularly well here. First I just wanna say that I really don't find anything "wrong" here. The only thing that bugged me even mildly was that the bowl wasn't centered perfectly vertically, but that's not much to complain about. I guess for my money, it isn't what you did with this photo, but what you didn't do with it that bothers me the most. With not-so-compelling subjects, It is necessary as photographers to do our best to MAKE them interesting. The dead above straight on angle is probably not the answer the large majority of the time. The angle and the lighting are just really flat and totally predictable. That can be good in some applications. I don't find it useful here.
Technical - Not quite as sharp as it could be most likely due to the very long shutter speed at 1/15sec. If you didn't take this from a tripod you probably should have. Besides that, maybe the color could've used a little adjustment but I think that's all up to you and how everything looked for real. Everything looks a little magenta to me.
Overall - Not a bad image, but lacking the pop that accompanies a good one. To me, it needs a new fresh interesting perspective. It may be something that is very easy to do. It might just be taking some extra shots, everytime you shoot, from an unusual perspective just to make sure you didn't miss anything. What the hell right? it doesn't cost you anything. I'm not an expert by any means, but I've found that you can use ordinary around the house stuff and make interesting photos. Best of luck on the challenges ahead - Bob |

I'm sure this is really tasty. The one thing I'm not sure about is the colour. I might have tried to contrast a bit more to bring out the rich purples in the cabbage, and greens in the avacado. The overall purple cast to the entire shot, is just a bit off putting. Really good idea, using the leaves as the entire background. 6 |

I like the color combination and the bowl but I wish you would have gotten a little closer. |

The light is not flattering for the subject. |

The salad looks yummy, and everything came out clear and sharp. The leaves make a very attractive, if impractical, table cloth. Nice shot. |

I'm not a big avocado fan but this does look yummy! The plate is a perfect setting for the salad and the colors and set up are wonderful. About the only things that seem to be working against you is light. I'm betting you are outside and it's cloudy. I think this would look so much more alive and really pop if there was better lighting. I like the leaves for your backdrop too. Started at a 6 but bumping to an 8 because you can't control weather, can you? :) |

Nice job using the leaves as the background, really good. I think the shot needs more light however. It looks a little dark. |

one of my favorites so far. Good mix of colours, good choice of plates, and I like the leaves as a bg. Ohhh I also like the speckles of pepper. Good job! |

Focus is a little soft for my taste. Nice composition. Like how you matched pretty closely the colors in and out of the dish! |

Seems very purply tinged - is the bowl purple too ? The border probably re-enforces that. I'm not sure it makes it more appealing. |

Good staging idea, would have worked best with some plainer looking preparation. There is too much similarity in and out of this circle to set off your salad well. |

Interesting color play! Everything looks to be in good focus, I like the clearish bowl allowing the background in beneath. I do like the idea behind the background too, but with the low light it doesn't set the salad off as much as a different bkgrnd might. I do like the way the lavender/purple inner border ties the photo together. 7 |
