People will probably feel that I have not met the challenge topic, but it did say "photograph it before, during or after". It did not specify how much before. This is one of my favorite pics I've taken so far. We'll see....

Shaggy Mane Omelette:

fresh shaggy mane mushrooms, prefferably unopened
6 eggs
butter
nutmeg

Slice mushrooms and sauté in butter
add nutmeg
add eggs

serves 1.........hungry person

from the web:
SHAGGY MANE
(Coprinus comatus)

Description: The shaggy mane or lawyer's wig is so large and distinctive that with a little practice you can identify it from a moving car.

The cap of a fresh specimen is a long, white cylinder with shaggy, upturned, brownish scales. The gills are whitish, and the entire mushroom is fragile and crumbles easily. Most important, as the shaggy mane matures, the cap and gills gradually dissolve into a black, inky fluid, leaving only the standing stalk. Size 4" to 6" tall, sometimes larger.

When and Where: Spring, summer and fall, growing in grass, soil or wood chips. Often seen scattered in lawns and pastures.

Cautions: Shaggy manes are best when picked before the caps begin to turn black. However, until you become familiar with these mushrooms, check for the developing ink to be sure of your identification. (note: The shaggy mane is the largest of a group of edible mushrooms called inky caps. The field guides listed at the end of this article can help you identify other members of this group.)

Cooking Hints: Saute butter and season with nutmeg or garlic. Good in scrambled eggs or chicken dishes. Shaggy manes are delicate and should be picked young and eaten the same day.

Wow, I am surprised this didn't do better in the challenge than it did, I had it pegged for a ribbon.

Really great shot.

Very novel approach - technical materpiece with gorgeous lighting, crisp focus and supreme composition. [10]

Congrats on your ribbon...

The contrast between the in-focue foreground and out-of-focus background gives this photo a strong 3D effect. Nice shot.

Yum! I would be afraid to pick mushrooms though, my luck I would get the poisonous ones, LOL! This is a great shot, the light, the DOF is wonderful but the balance seems off to me, the big space in the middle is a bit of a distraction to me, maybe a little different cropping or angle of the shot would have fixe this for me. I started this at a 6 but am going up to an 8 because the overall shot is very good.

Great shot... for the Title you could have said "Mushroom Omelette, Starts Here" instead of that long text.

Colors are nice. Mushrooms look poisonous. Perhaps an ingredient but not something created out of a recipy book.

I really nice photo. Great DOF. I really like how the background is blurred. Nothing distracting there. I'm wondering if a little more lighting on the mushrooms might have benefitted this shot a bit. This side of the mushrooms seems kind of dark, whereas the background looks quite bright. Almost like you were shooting with the sun in front of you. Still a very nice photo though. ~Heather~

Those are some odd looking mushrooms. I like the cool blue of the one mushroom contrasting with the warm lighting and colors of the grass/leaves. Focus works well for me and the composition is nice. I covered much of the top half and found that I liked it better without that large expanse of soft focus background, the crispness of the focus on the foreground really draws my eyes, but I find them straining as they stray up to the top. Nicely done! 7

Very nice image. Didn't fit criteria of a prepared dish, so only an 8

A really nice picture here! And I know that omelette will taste good, I picked this kind of mushrooms just the other day here in Sweden and they are soooo good! Very well done taking this photo. Can´t wait to get the recipe!

These are great mushrooms, but at a much earlier stage of growth, when just an inch high, lighty sauteed in butter.

Awesome! Make sure to pick em and use em before they get inky! I think this will do well.

You sure they're not poisonous. Great depth of field and the bright colors of the background help to bring out the sharply focus 'rooms out of the shot. Really good details in the 'rooms.
