Taken in desperation late today (Sunday). I was shooting some gulls at the harbourfront with only minimal success. I was about to leave when I noticed the sun was going to appear in a small gap between some clouds and the horizon. I decided to wait, and after chasing a bunch of seagulls through an empty carpark to get them to fly in to the sunlight, this was one of three shots thatI got. I hope the people in the apartments across the road got a good laugh.
It is about 3/4 frame, so there is some cropping but not too much. I love the warm sunlight on the underbelly and up the wing.
I have increased the saturation a bit, but this is very close to the colours as they appeared. I ran this through neat image and sharpened... and there you have it.

Thanks everyone for the comments.
I think both luck and a little patience were on my side for this shot.

Wow. Your gull's score sure kicked the crap out of mine. Deserved, tho, as you had very nice light. Congrats 8-)

Top gull shot. Nice DOF (lost the busy background) but although the sunlight is nice it lacks context, so I wonder if this may be better in mono?

Lovely lighting on the bird's underside. Nice focus. Good blurred background. I think this one will do well. I think I'd crop a bit less tightly to emphasise the space around the bird and that it is in flight. Nice shot.

Beautiful sunset capture. The lighting makes this image stand above the rest. 10 -danny

Love the color of this shot. Very good focus on the seagull's face, the rest is nice, but the face comes through exceptionally well. Nice framing, but a bit more space to the right wouldn't have hurt either (closer to that infamous 1/3 rule). 10 Rob the Swash

So far the best of the seagull pics... great job, I love the colors. Your eye just zeros in on the bird because of the background and great contrast with the bird. You can tell it's a great pic without much post processing because the detail is still there. 8.

Nice lighting but the focus looks a little off.

A little too much noise reduction, lost a lot of the details. Admire it because you panned. The colors are interesting. 8

Now just how did you manage to get the under wing of that seagull in such an amazing color? It is what really makes this photo. A near perfect capture - 9.

I like the capture of this shot but I really don't care for the coloring, bird looks strange half one color and half black and white, doesn't seem natural to me.

what's with the colors? is that natural? or a photoshop desaturation?
09/29/2003 01:09:38 PM
excellent image. I take gull shots myself but have never been lucky enough to catch underlighting like this - good luck with the challenge - 9

Great DOF and great lighting on his underbelly, like that you captured his face.

Lovely shot..I'm wondering if the orange is this gull's natural color or the sunlight? It's great either way. The bird could of been more in focus making the details [feathers] sharper. I think you did very well and your sure 100% on the challenge.

Ok, this blows away my seagull shot! Nice and close and the positioning of the subject within the frame is great. Love the light and the shallow DOF that blurs out the water. Terrific job!

Great shot, gorgeous light. Not sure about your crop though. You can see artifacting around the bird as a result of over-sharpening. 7
Edit: I'm always baffled as to why I feel that some people mark out my comments as not being helpful.

Great lighting here, love the orange glow on the left side, contrasting to the gray overall feeling. 9
