Challenge: Something Old (Classic Editing)
Camera: Sony Mavica FD-83
Location: my bathroom
Date: Aug 1, 2002
Date Uploaded: Aug 1, 2002

I borrowed a Mavica FD200 camera for this one - HUGE difference from my older camera. This picture is a test of some of the things I've read about on DPC message boards, playing with light, making the background disappear, etc. I know it's a funky interpretation of the challenge, but I like it.

I don't speak that much Spanish but I think I "get it" anyway

Excellent photo and creativity. One tiny thing (and it's really not anything substantial), it seems that the white is a little grey. My spanish is VERY rusty - I'm sure that my literal translation isn't quite right - the banana in the pocket of the devil? Any way, I very much like this image and it's creativity. Well Done! 8

original idea, nicely done

Dont know if I would have had the whole bunch in shot but I do like this shot regardless.

Nice idea! Unfortunately I don't understand spanish but I think I get the photo without the title, too :-) I like the lighting and the colors. Only thing I would like better is if I could see the bananas fully and not cut at the left side. Zoom a little out.

Good composition .. Below average subject ...

huh?

Can't read spanish, but I think I get the idea! Very nice shot! I do have to question the cropping of the last two bananas, but the contast between almost ripe and way overly ripe is very strong. (poor guy had a tougher life than it's neighbors, just kidding, I know it's from a different bunch) Would you please offer the fully translated title after the challenge for those of us, ignorant non-spanish types? Very strong entry! 8 Swash

nice contrast!

nice framing so that the bananas have somewhere to point. Why is the one banana so old looking while the others are still green?
08/08/2002 05:56:00 AM
Needs to be a bit sharper. Good idea for a subject.

excellent composition.... good work with the white background... that's not easy to do :) the old banana stands out very well here... I would also like to see this view from the other side where the bananas come together :) I think this image would also have some more punch with the baseline of these bananas forming a diagonal in the image... maybe about a 30 degree tilt to the left with the camera? good shot :) - jmsetzler

I'd like this better if the left of the bunch wasn't cropped out.

Excellent picture--an unexpected subject, great composition, as well.

Great idea.

I was just thinking about doing a shot in all B&W with the exception on one item and was annoyed I could not do it for the contest. You see to have pulled off that effect quite well all in color. It does look a little 'soft' at points and might be served by a larger DOF. The concept which is outstanding IMO deserves another attempt at a slightly more clear shot. --9 Agamemnon

A great take on old.

Nice bright yellows, and I like the way you have it framed. I think a sharper focus all the way across (the ones on the left look softer) would be effective. Also, it is a bit close, in my opinion, at the top. karmat

Very creative idea.

I don't understand your title. I used a translator on the internet and it tells me it means "the plátano in the pocket of the devil." Is that the correct translation? Either way I really like your idea of using food(I used the same concept)! :)

Interesting approach to the challenge - I like your idea. Your framing seems off to me, though. There is a lot of empty space at the bottom and in the top right but the bananas on the left are partially cropped. The focus of this picture is the old banana but that doesnt sit at a natural position to within the frame. I think you should have had the bunch of bananas fill the frame with the old one at the 1/3, 1/3 point. Your arrangement of the bananas is good but you've pushed the colour up too far for my taste. On my screen they look un-naturally yellow.

I like this allot, although I find the focus a bit soft... great concept. Ronin -7

cropped a little tight on the left

I like the idea behind the shoe
08/05/2002 09:36:00 PM
great Concept! I really appreiciate a solid concept of communication. The contrast of what the old banana with the new banana really strengthens the objective. Simplicity ussually speaks the clearest.

jejeje pana no entendi pero esta comico ....eso creo
08/05/2002 03:40:00 PM
The contrast between the old banana and the new ones is perfecto!
08/05/2002 02:17:00 PM
Very nice idea -- and so different from the others. I absolutely hate bananas, but enjoy this photo.
08/05/2002 10:43:00 AM
I like the contrast between old and new. The only suggestion I could make would be to try a softer diffused light to reduce the distracting shadows.

the plant in the top of the hell? take away one banana, usually a close up works better in odd numbers, yet than there are 7 good bananas, wait the brown ones are swweeter I'm so confused hmm. try may a purple background? Or believe what you want
08/05/2002 05:42:00 AM
Very clever idea :). The photograph is colourful, well composed, and very nicely lit. Well done.
