texture of antlers lost in space of photo; if you could have gotten right up close to those antlers, it might have worked - but they weren't about to stay still for that were they? Interesting shot though -

It's a decent photo but if you hadn't given it a title would we have known where to look? I realise the problems of getting close to this subject your lucky to be able to find subjects like this.
07/26/2002 01:46:00 AM
is that a texture??

I saw your post in the forums about this photo and would like to comment... first of all, whether or not this is a 'difficult' or 'unique' photograph is basically irrelevant to the 'challenge' concept. I can see why you may have received comments on this issue. Even though it is very unusual that you were able to get this photo, it doesn't apply in the challenge. Even though these deer do have 'velvet' antlers, you can't see the texture of it in this photograph. Try to imagine this photograph with a title of "untitled" being entered in this texture challenge.... It's a case of the title saving the photo. The subject of the photo is not a 'texture' subject, even though it has texture... it's not readily visible to the viewer. You could have named this photo "the rough asphalt" or "tree leaves textures" or "fur texture" or anything else along those lines and gotten the same result. I'm sorry to hear that your luck with this image is not good this week :) = 5 - jmsetzler

Do you have a powerful zoom lens on your camera or did you just get pretty close to those animals? It's a shame that other people on the site can't appreciate wildlife like people from northern Canada and other forested areas.
07/25/2002 03:21:00 AM
I might have chosen a closer shot of one of the deer if possible.
07/24/2002 08:56:00 PM
love it...

I get the "idea" that texture is here but, I don't get the "feel" of texture in this picture.
07/24/2002 04:22:00 PM
Perhaps the experience of photographing the deer was more exciting than the finished product. Too many distractions, like the white post and the wite lines and the guard rail that cuts off their feet. Also it seems crowded on the left. Could it have been cropped wider? Unfortunelately a photo is only as good as it's WORST element.
07/24/2002 02:58:00 PM
Well yes, they have velvet antlers but tat really isn't obvious from this picture.
Focussing on the deer is pretty soft and composition could be better - they are both looking out of the frame in different directions which makes for a confusing picture and the right deer is very close to the edge of the shot.
07/24/2002 02:42:00 PM
Nice picture, however a close up would have dealt better with the topic.
07/24/2002 02:34:00 PM
nice photo, but it seems more incidental that you have captured the velvet antlers here. I just don't see the texture as the main focus - but give you points for getting a good shot = 4
07/24/2002 01:34:00 PM
The human eye can see the velvet from this distance and lighting angle because the brain puts that texture information in when it processes the image. The camera has to be right in its face to see texture.
07/24/2002 12:45:00 PM
Doesn't fit the challenge. If it was a better picture of a dear(close up, brighter, more interesting) it would score higher.
07/24/2002 12:41:00 PM
This meets the Texture challenge requirement but only because you say so in the title. I KNOW antlers have that velvety texture but I can't detect it from looking at this picture. You would have a much better pic for this challenge if you had cropped to only have the head of the left guy and showing good close up focus of those velvety antlers. This pic has a snapshot quality to it.
07/24/2002 12:39:00 PM
Not bad. For me, it looks too much like a 'snapshot'. Something I may do, at least for 'texture' challenge, is to crop and focus on one thing, say the deer to the left, and maybe emphasize the antlers. Sometimes, for me, taking a snapshot and cropping it can really change the image dramatically.
Still great work!

This photo is more of a snapshot than something I expect to see in a challenge.

Total Score5

For those that are just learning, like me.

Composition: Scoring in this area is based on basic composition of a picture and includes the rule of thirds, balance, cropping, and curved and diagonal lines. Subject matter that does not lend itself to the picture or otherwise unwanted is also considered here.

Originality: Scoring in this area is based on pictures or concepts that I have seen, as well as how much effort you have invested in the picture. Usually a little something that sets it aside from a snapshot. Does it make me want to come back for another look? You know things like that.

Technical Aspects: Focus, exposure, lighting, and other special effects (done by the camera), and post processing are all considered in this category.

Meets Challenge: This is based on my interpretation of if you, have/have not, met the challenge. This is fairly simple but quite important for this site.

There are many sites that can give you assistance in achieving better skills in photography, but I think the best way to learn is to take pictures and show them to other people. Believe me when it is a good one you will know it.

Good luck!

Your photo is a good one of the deer (although a little overexposed), but we're too far away to really appreciate the texture of the velvet.
07/23/2002 07:41:00 PM
poorly composed, poor background, no texture!
07/23/2002 07:20:00 PM
This is a pretty nice photo of opportunity. I love deer shots. Yes, they do have lovely velvetty horns, but even if I download this shot and blow it way the heck up, it's still pretty hard to see that much detail. The road behind the deers also conveys the sense of "tameness" in these two. 5 Swash

Good catch of the dear, but the texture is not tangible.. just inferred.
07/23/2002 01:07:00 PM
maybe a closer crop

Texture??
07/22/2002 09:55:00 PM
I like wildlife pics, and velvet is a cool texture, but this shot has many elements that I would not have incorporated. This would have been better singling out the buck on the left and zooming in on his head. Ideally, [and I am a purist] I would have tried to get a shot of him without the highway or post in the shot.
07/22/2002 09:26:00 PM
Since you've titled it what you have, I think the antlers need to be more the focal point, but I understand that may have been difficult without totally losing your subjects or having really good zoom. karmat

You fooled the meter on this one.Could be a little darker.
07/22/2002 06:50:00 PM
Really could use a close-up of the antlers if that's the subject.
07/22/2002 06:44:00 PM
tenuous link?
07/22/2002 02:38:00 PM
dear are so cool. woul dlove to see the velvet antlers up close.
07/22/2002 02:03:00 PM
lots of texture here
07/22/2002 12:10:00 PM
I don't like that they're that close to the road.....
07/22/2002 11:24:00 AM
Yikes hate to see them so close the road. I ride a motorcycle and I'm always watching for them. Pretty, and healthy looking. Kee

Too bad you could not have gotten more of a "close-up" of the antlers! Without the title, I would think that the "texture" was the grass, trees, etc. - a little bit of everything.
07/22/2002 08:20:00 AM
You tried to hard to get both into shot, when just one from a lower angle would have been better.
07/22/2002 12:22:00 AM
WOW ! You got pretty close ! I always see the hard stone like antlers. These are cool. I would have done my crop right up under them so there was little grass.
