I think a litlle more even lighting would have set this apart.

Well there is certianly a lot of texture going on here. I love the shot, it's very extreem. The contrast is a little too much for me. the lightest areas are just a little blown out, I'm not sure there is much you can do about it except for perhaps shooting a different time of day. Nice work, one of my top 10

The only thing that I see as a problem is the lighting is a bit to hot, you might have waited for the sun to go down or used a white sheet to difuse the lighting evenly over the bark... just a thought.

That's some pretty intense bark!

For those that are just learning, like me.

Composition: Scoring in this area is based on basic composition of a picture and includes the rule of thirds, balance, cropping, and curved and diagonal lines. Subject matter that does not lend itself to the picture or otherwise unwanted is also considered here.

Originality: Scoring in this area is based on pictures or concepts that I have seen, as well as how much effort you have invested in the picture. Usually a little something that sets it aside from a snapshot. Does it make me want to come back for another look? You know things like that.

Technical Aspects: Focus, exposure, lighting, and other special effects (done by the camera), and post processing are all considered in this category.

Meets Challenge: This is based on my interpretation of if you, have/have not, met the challenge. This is fairly simple but quite important for this site.

There are many sites that can give you assistance in achieving better skills in photography, but I think the best way to learn is to take pictures and show them to other people. Believe me when it is a good one you will know it.

Good luck!

Ruff! Ruff!! Just couldn't pass that up, being owned by a dog as I am.

lighting here was very harsh, it washes out highlights and makes for some deep shadows, thus detracting from the image. softer light, such as that found on a bright but overcast day would have worked much better, i think. ~mcmurma

the lighting looks a little harsh to me, but it does bring out the peeling effect more.

Great framing. Even closer might be nice.

Maybe a little closer to apreciate the texture

Nice image. Like all the life in the bark and the play of lights and darks.

A bit much light on the left, I htink, and though it causes some nice shadowy areas, it almost washes out part of the bark. karmat

The lighting doesn't really work for me.

Overexposed. Neat tree though

Nice texture on a good specimen. I would really like to see more in the shadow area. Maybe raising the gamma would accomplish this. I notice that the highlights are a bit hot. My thoughts are that you might shoot such a shot at a different time of day or try using a diffuser to even out the light.

too bright on the left hand side

Good pict. That's what I'd call some pretty major texturing... Good lighting, good focus.
